Best value items in supermarkets?

Food and household shopping is painfully expensive for everyone now. What have you spotted that's well worth buying?

My contribution is Tesco's own toilet paper. It's cheap and also good quality.

Myself and DH look through the reduced sections and see if we could make a meal from reduced meat fish and then go the fruit and veg section and do the same. We have it down to a fine art and know the times that reductions take place at the places we go to..

Essential Waitrose Original Blend Tea Bags £2.30 for 160. They taste great and are excellent value. I had to change after PG Tips started tasting awful and these are truly lovely and bargainous!

Asda cream crackers only 49p and taste nicer then Jacobs

ScottBakula · 24/05/2025 19:06

I agree with you @MerylSqueak tescos toilet is very good value.
So is their lightly seeded loaf.

When it comes to spices and herbs both fresh and dried , dried pulses Indian supermarkets are absolutely hands down the best value.

The pizzas from Hearty Food Co (a Tesco brand) are really good value. 65p for a small one and just over £1 for medium. They’re not like cardboard with plastic cheese, which is what some cheap pizzas are!

Also, Tesco single-serve tins of baked beans are just 25p and I’m sure they’re made by Heinz!

Buy it when you see it:

Azeera coffee for £3.50; half price legs of lamb, etc

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 24/05/2025 19:25

@MerylSqueak Aldi own brand loo rolls are good too.

On the whole, bargains are there, but you do need to try them and see how you get on. Okay the own brand might not taste quite the same as the big name, but they are half the price - are they only half as good?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/05/2025 19:25

Asda loo roll (Shades , quilted)
I rarely go to Asda but it's worth a visit for me to get this .

As a lifelong fancy beauty product addict I’ve found that many cheap dupes don’t actually cut it with one exception.

I love love love Aldis Lacura night cream the plain no nonsense one in a dark blue tub. Has a lovely consistency but still feels thick enough to nourish your skin yet rubs in nicely. I often alternate a retinol serum with face oil and at this time of year a self tan every few nights but still like to use a night cream. Because it’s got nothing fancy going on except to deeply moisturise it doesn’t clash with the stuff I use before

Also cheap about to use both on my necks and décolletage area.

Another vote for Tesco bog roll here, it's as good as Andrex/Cushelle etc. Their furniture polish is no different to Mr. Sheen/Pledge either but it's nearly £1 cheaper. The Creamfields dairy products are generally good too.

ScottBakula · 24/05/2025 19:36

@Forgottenmyphone I agree with tescos hearty food pizza but I am a bit miffed that they jumped from 85p to £1.10 a few weeks ago.

Whatwouldnanado · 24/05/2025 19:39

I have switched from Liz Earle cleanser to Lacura. Just as good and lasts ages.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 24/05/2025 19:41

Not a brand one but I buy enormous quantities of carrots, “wonky” apples and popping corn as snacks here. Healthy and dirt cheap.

Tesco's own brand are just as good too.

The Creamfields dairy products are generally good too. No they're not, they're barely edible, but I'll be on the Zesty White Wine tonight. Grin

I'm another yellow sticker shopper. Went much earlier than usual today and didn't get much.

Aldi instant coffee with the gold lid is like a better Douwe Egbert.
I like the Lidl £1.79 instant coffee best.

Aldi or Lidl washing powder.

I prefer Lidl to Aldi but do most of my shopping in Tesco as it's nearer.

Lidl or Tesco bog roll is fine. The cheap Aldi one is far too thin.

D🐱 ❤ the VitaCat 'dreamies' dupe. Why why why did I tell them about it?!

Both Aldi (Lacura) and Lidl (Cien) skincare are good. I like Cien shampoo.

Forgottenmyphone · 24/05/2025 20:05

The Creamfields Dairy is hit and miss. Big hit for their low fat natural yogurt and cheddar. Their mozzarella tasted like soap.

Forgottenmyphone · 24/05/2025 20:08

Morrisons do some lovely, very cheap candles. They don’t have such a long burn time as other brands, but the scent lasts right to the very end unlike others.

SpottedDonkey · 24/05/2025 20:08

Pineapples. I bought a big, delicious one for £1 at Sainsbury’s this week. Three minutes with a sharp knife and I had a big bowlful in the fridge. No idea how imported tropical fruit can possibly be so cheap.

Also, Lidl Bixies. They’re equivalent to Weetabix only bigger, more substantial & much cheaper. A bargain.

Mary46 · 24/05/2025 20:11

Lacura range very nice. Got almond scrub last summer lovely. Aldi coconut washing liquid lovely too.

@SpottedDonkey pineapples are really cheap right now aren't they.

I love them and like you I got a big one and chopped it up and put it in the fridge . It didn't last long !
Have you tried it with a tiny bit of cinnamon it's lovely.

There are no 'stunt' pineapple in this house 🤣

My best way to save money to eat mostly vegetarian. I'm not vegetarian but I reckon. 80% of my meals are.
