Glastonbury questions - first timer

I’m going this year for the first time. I have questions about “can’t do without” items to take. Also, I know you can’t take glass in. What do you do about a mirror (to do your make up)? And drinks - do you decant into plastic bottles? If you take tinned drinks, can you get ice anywhere?

Please share your top tips. I’m a bit nervous about it.

Power banks.
Go to Argos, buy the biggest one you can find.
The signal is poor so your phone will wear itself out seeking.
Two or three monster blocks will save the day.

Food : take your own metal fork and plastic plate
then you can rest the flimsy plates on a proper one and have a decent fork

Loo roll : carry some in a ziplock bag at all times - so even if the bag falls in the dirt you will not get a gritty bum.

Find the Cider bus and orienteer form there.

Leon will be selling AMAZING veggie food in West Holts
The Falafel Wraps up towards Theatre are the best.

Carry a cagoul to wear / sit on at all times

Toilets smell less higher up the hills

ENJOY

PS :
Showers by the tree in the Green Fields are the nicest

Toilets in the Cabaret and Theatre fields are good
and
DO NOT miss chilling for an afternoon in the Circus tent
its more astounding than any of the main bands

Travel Johns are your saviour
Also a small washing up bowl you can line with a sturdy plastic bin liner and use as a loo! No way am I pooing on a porta loo

Glastonbury is the best place on earth, do not stress, it will be amazing.

You can get ice either from the co op or from some of the general stalls selling chocolate and milk etc. take a little thermos food container to keep some cold in.

take cans of drink, you can get cans of wine now that are pretty good, store them under your tent groundsheet at night, keeps them cool.

use the lockups for any valuables. Don’t worry about night tent thieves, unlikely to affect you in the family area. Obviously be cautious but don’t overly panic.

practice carrying all your stuff. Big backpack on back, smaller one on front, one handle of a tent between you and someone else is manageable.

if you want to do a booze run you can get a bus to shepton mallet from the bus station, it drops you right outside a massive Tesco. Or leave booze in car and go back for a second trip if you’re driving

And yeah to add. If they discover your compact mirror they will confiscate but hide it well in your bag and they’re unlikely to search in that much detail

Talkinpeace · 24/05/2025 20:12

Important thing to understand about Glastonbury and all huge festivals

around 25% of the people you will meet have not paid for their tickets.
They are the bin crew
They are the stewards
They are the stallholders
They are the performers (even top end main stage get paid a pittance)
They are the field managers
They are the food supply team

Its a community and once you tap into that
and forget everything you ever saw on the telly
you'll have a wonderful time

ChicBalonz · 24/05/2025 21:20

You shouldn't bring a compact mirror because of the glass. I had an acrylic mirror I bought off Ebay for Glasto.

Yes to everything straighttomyhead advised and others. The loos are fine. Being loo roll with you during the day, layers of clothes, sun cream and I used to change my phone into an old Nokia . Buy box wine and take it out if its box - all booze allowed into the festival bit. Open mind and just go with the flow - you’ll love it

You can buy a glass free safety mirror from amazon.

Toilets in recent years are fine - compost toilets, the toilets at the Kids/Cabaret and Theatre fields tend to be nicer and quieter. The female urinals are something to try at least once.

If you're taking a backpack daytime attach a carabiner to the top loop. Then you can use that to hang it from the door frame and have easy access to the tissues and hand sanitizer you keep in your front pouch.

Also:

Take said hand sanitizer and tissues, at least a pack of tissues for each day.

Take a collapsible water carrier so you can fill it with water to keep in your tent.

Save space by soaking pads with micellar water and putting that in a ziplock bag.

Tent life is stressful, if you organise your outfits into luggage bags or medium sized freezer bags future you will thank you.

No one looks good in rosa bloom jumpsuits and fuck trying to pee in them.

Tarotwithaball · 24/05/2025 21:42

For powe banks, you can rent one on a daily basis. You pay a deposit and swap for a new one each day.

Tarotwithaball · 24/05/2025 21:44

If you can, get a thermal mat or a cheap emergency/foil blanket to pop under your sleeping mat or inflating mattress. It gets colder at night than you'd think.

FinallyOnTheUp · 24/05/2025 22:23

Spray bandanas/face masks with perfume for putting over face when using toilets - works well for kids!

If the forecast is for sunny, then foil blankets to cover your tent with to keep it as cool as possible, and if you can carry a small garden parasol, it can be a life saver for small kids during the day as there's very little outdoor shade

Your phone number on a bracelet for each kid, just in case - if kids are a bit older, point out high landmarks in each area and tell them to head to it if you get separated and you'll meet them there

Disposable cameras can be a nice thing for kids to have, so that they can have their own memories of the fest

It's an amazing experience!

On a similar note... dungarees are a very bad decision when using festival loos. Skirts and dresses are easiest and make sure your feet are covered in boots ideally - not flip flops. Keep loo roll on you.
