A Wally is a pickled gherkin.

I’m tickled at the thought of one portion of fish and chips serving three people. I don’t have them very often (coeliac) but on the rare occasion I find a gf chippy, anyone trying to share would likely lose a hand 😂

You haven't seen Yorkshire fish and chips.

The portion is so large the fish hangs over both sides of our dinner plates, which themselves are so big, they wouldn't fit in our old kitchen cupboards.

You can't get all the chips on the plate, it's a literal mountain of food. Even my big eating, manual worker DP can't eat anywhere near a standard portion.

Plenty for him and me to share and if we had a small child to feed, we could definitely stretch one portion to three of us if we got mushy peas too.

Growing up in the '70's and 80's the queue began around 4pm when the chippy opened (to start the frying, nothing was ready by then) It was not uncommon to queue for up to an hour.
My own preference was chips & gravy, so you'll know where i' m from 😂

I grew up in Hull and live in York.

I’m just a massively greedy mare 😂

I grew up working class in a northern town. We went to the chippy a lot but not for fish. It was usually chips with gravy and/or mushy peas, maybe a scallop or a pineapple fritter. Adding a pie would make a 'dinner' but it was usually for the men. Friday night chippy tea was definitely a thing.

I've had tiny portions of fish & chips in Yorkshire, central Leeds for example, and massive ones elsewhere, including Lancashire.

No we only had fish and chips maybe once or twice a year. My parents were pretty poor and it was too expensive.

A large gherkin. Usually found in a big jar on the chippie counter. 😃

I grew up in a working class household in the north but we were comfortable financially. My parents once even owned a chippy! Yes we routinely had a chippy tea or supper once a week.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 26/05/2025 16:32

I go away with friends every year to a holiday cottage. There is a very good fish and chip shop in the village so that is always our first evenings supper. Included in the welcome pack is a bottle of champagne so it’s become our tradition to have fish and chips with champagne every year. I’m pleased to report that it goes down very nicely. 🍾🥂
