Have never had any proper money to spend on furniture so everything is second hand/ikea/cheap
I've been given some money and I want to buy some solid wood furniture, first things I'm looking for is a bedside table and a dressing table but I don't know what shops or websites to look at. I've looked at dusk, oak furniture land, dunelm but nothing is grabbing me. Beside table budget 300 each, dressing table probably 500. Suggestions please

I’d look for second hand good quality mid century furniture as an an example. So much better quality than modern furniture. I follow someone called elfinmidcentury on instagram and have bought a sideboard from him. It was brilliant and is beautiful.

Local independent store's rather than chains but they can be expensive.
The post above is a good call and you could get items that no one else has .

I got a gorgeous solid wood tv cabinet from 121homefurniture. It was one I've had my eye on for ages..even better it was nearly £100 cheaper than any other place that had it. It has some nice dressing tables. Another one is Reclaim Nation.

I too support the idea of shopping for pre-owned furniture.
There are so many pluses to it.
It's always made very well in a way that furniture isn't made these days.
It's made of superior material and is unique and likely something you will get much use from and it will retain its beauty.
The only downside is although it does take time to look for new furniture also, it does take a lot of looking and typically more time to find that special piece that you love.
Whether you choose brand new furniture or previously enjoyed furniture, I wish you happy looking!

It’s great that you finally have the budget to invest in solid furniture — that makes a real difference in how a room feels and functions. For pieces like bedside tables and a dressing table, here’s a simple way to think about choosing them:

1. Decide your style first
Look at the colours and finishes you already have or want. Solid wood can range from rich oak tones to lighter ash — choosing something you genuinely like makes it much easier to narrow down options.

2. Measure your space carefully
Before choosing a bedside table or dressing table, measure the height and width you have available. A bedside table that’s too tall or too small compared to your mattress can look awkward, and a dressing table needs enough room for a stool and space to move around.

3. Prioritise quality and construction
With solid wood furniture, the quality of materials and how pieces are joined together matter more than brand names. Things like dovetail drawers and hardwood frames mean the furniture will last years, not just months.

4. Think about function as well as form
For a bedside table, don’t just pick something that looks nice — consider how many drawers or shelves you need for your everyday items. Dressing tables benefit from good storage and a comfortable spot for a mirror and stool.

Some shops you might find helpful in the UK for solid wood furniture (in your price range) include smaller boutique makers, local woodworking studios, or curated marketplaces like Made.com and Loaf, as well as established stores like Oak Furniture Land and smaller artisan brands - but it’s worth comparing how the pieces feel in person or in photos.

If you want a bit more perspective on why choosing the right quality pieces matters - especially for bedrooms where you interact with the furniture every day - this article explains the long-term benefits of investing in well-made bedroom furniture rather than just anything that’s cheap:
