Seasonal depression but in Summer

Is this a thing at all? I know for most people it’s the dark winter months that contribute to low mood, but I seem to suffer around May/June every year, and I’ve never really understood why. I possibly have undiagnosed ADHD, I don’t know if that’s relevant.. if it’s some kind of subconscious sensory reaction to too much light and heat or something? I feel exhausted in the summer evenings, generally quite low, and very anxious in the mornings.

Just interested if anyone else experiences this!

Definitely. As soon as we get to September and it starts getting darker earlier and getting colder, I feel so much happier 😄🥰

Yes it's too bright and I don't want to be out in it all the time. It's draining. I feel similar. I love the winter though.

ChidisGardener · 22/05/2025 21:39

I used too. I'd start complaining mid May and keep going until mid Aug. It's the too light evenings - annoying. I demand a proper delimitation between night and day. I don't mind a warm evening but should be dark from 8. Otherwise mucks up my winding down and going to bed. (Also probable ADHD)

As I've got well old - nearly 60 I noticed last year was first year I hadn't minded. Not sure why.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 22/05/2025 21:41

I’m all about autumn and winter too.

If it makes you feel any better, only a month to go until it starts getting darker again.

Obviously it’s barely noticeable at first, but it’s going in the right direction at least.

DrEllie · 22/05/2025 22:03

I always feel mucky and headachy in summer. The heat, humidity, insects, dust, pollen. Everything is too 'extra' - roll on autumn. Everything seems more noisy too. Definitely sensory overload

FionnulaTheCooler · 22/05/2025 22:05

Yes, I hate it when it never really gets dark properly. I've been waking up around 4am with the dawn and struggling to get back to sleep, I wish it would stay dark until at least 6.30am all year round.

It's unlikely either of you have got ADHD. Get out there and enjoy the glorious spring.

Cappuccinowoah · 22/05/2025 22:11

So interesting and helpful to hear other people’s experiences, thank you! I feel like I need some practical tips for handling it - there seems to be a lot of advice around self care in the winter months - I wish I could find the equivalent for this, because I’m really not sure what would help!

Yes me! Hate the sun, the people everywhere. The light evenings, much prefer drawing the curtains and snuggling under a blanket to lying in bed boiling hot!
I love winter.

Have to admit this made me laugh. That is another valuable perspective - perhaps I need to stop overthinking it and just try and enjoy it! 😂

I am NT but I get thrown in summer. Lack of routine, usual things not happening, friends not around. Love September, everything returns to normal.

WhyisKatealwayslate · 22/05/2025 22:18

Do it, OP! Take a walk in the park, marvel at the trees and flowers. Have a coffee in a cafe with your book. Sit outside with a G&T.

We'll have seemingly endless months of grey and darkness soon.

Though I reserve the right to moan "it's too hot" as soon as it goes above 23° 😊

LogicalBlodge · 22/05/2025 22:20

Yes I have adhd and I get anxiety in april/may time.

I think its because we produce less melatonin.

I have to start thinking about and mentally prepping for spring from January!

giddyauntie123 · 22/05/2025 22:20

I know what you mean, you're not alone
I felt much better about it since I joined a swim/dip group, and then can enjoy the beautiful days with company rather than feeling fomo x

LogicalBlodge · 22/05/2025 22:21

Also highly recommend spending as much time in daylight as possible!

Dawnchorusiswonderful · 22/05/2025 22:22

Yes I get very depressed when the weather is warm and sunny.
I actually long for rain.

I hate the way in winter you can be cosy in bed but inevitably wake up in the night with freezing shoulders or leg.
So easy to have a cheeky doze in the summer inside or out.

Summer is so easy. Cheaper, more time, less clothes to worry about.

The idea of winter is great. The reality is it’s an expensive, uncomfortable, bore.

Carrotsurprise · 22/05/2025 22:34

I understand, I'm an indoorsy sort of person and in summer there's a lot of pressure to go outside all the time. A lot of "go outside and enjoy this glorious weather!" when I've enjoyed the glorious weather a couple of times already this week and I'm done with it.

AliasGraced · 22/05/2025 22:37

This is the first time I have ever felt like that . I’m finding the sun and the brightness too much. I feel overwhelmed by the noise outside and all the people. I don’t enjoy sitting in the garden. I’ve never felt like that before and usually crave the sun and the warmth. This year I find it stressful and it’s depressing me.

LogicalBlodge · 22/05/2025 22:46

I'm quite relieved it's about 17 degrees where I am this weekend.

Main issue for me is my flat faces south so it's an absolute sauna.

I don't mind a late afternoon sun that stretches into evening but the daytime is too much 😆

Oh I don’t really get cold like that, sleep with the window open all year round!

Hate summer clothes. I’m fat so they’re really uncomfortable.

IsawwhatIsaw · 22/06/2025 12:01

The heat, the long long days, the endless brightness. I have hayfever and sun type allergies so Summer not a good time for me
I long for autumn, mwith cooler air, nights drawing in.

Gingernaut · 22/06/2025 12:05

Allergic asthmatic ginger here

It's too bright, too hot, too polluted and a large portion of the plant life wants me dead

I'm wheezing and coughing, using my inhalers and people can't fathom why I'm not happy

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 22/06/2025 12:35

The days are getting shorter.

Bliss.

IsawwhatIsaw · 22/06/2025 18:19

@gingernaut, @ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself
yes wheezing , coughing , steroid creams and needing sun allergy cream. I think climate change and pollution - and getting a bit older- are making my problems worse..

days slowly getting shorter, I can’t wait.😛
