The woman is being kept alive on life support while her baby is growing. The baby is now around 22 weeks, when his mother was declared brain dead she was about 8 weeks pregnant. I’m really not sure about this? On the one hand yes the baby deserves a chance, but is it ethical to keep someone on life support just as a vessel for that baby to continue growing ?
Very touchy subject I guess.

Fetus of brain dead Georgia woman kept alive due to abortion ban is growing, says family — The Guardian

Hospital plans to keep Adriana Smith on life support until August, when doctors will deliver baby via C-section

Well if you view women as fetal incubators (which the US does) this is how it plays out.

there’s another thread on this OP, might be good to join that one

It's a very sad situation - in days gone by we'd have had no way to keep the mother alive and so the child would have been lost, too. However now we do have that technology, I do think it's humane to bring the baby to term if possible. There have been other cases, here's a child born 54 days after his mother was declared brain dead.

Here's another baby born in Portugal to a woman who died:

If a dead woman can gestate a baby, then why bother with live ones ?

oustedbymymate · 21/05/2025 13:20

It's absolutely barbaric. Really awful and I can't get my head around it.

I think there are no guarantees there’s a good chance baby will be profoundly disabled ( fluid on the brain) or not survive. It’s an incredible amount of work involved as pregnancy involves lots of hormones which now hsve to be artificially introduced.

There is debate about this in Georgia, the attorney general has said ending life support for a brain dead woman is not an act intended to cause abortion so would be subject to snti abortion laws. A senator has come out and said hospital is doing right thing.

I don’t think it’s ever been for such a long time before it’s going to be 24 weeks in total ( if they can keep going to intended 32 weeks) 168 days. Who knows what impact that will have on fetal development, it feels like a ghoulish experiment.

I also noticed in both your articles the decision was made in agreement with the families. I think a massive difference in this case is the family we’re not given options.
