Theatre with subtitles

I wear hearing aids. Partially deaf not totally
I've never been to a theatre with subtitles before. It didn't occur to me but I don't know maybe it should have
I went to see Wicked and quite sure I missed half of what they were saying/singing in that so missed a lot of the story/jokes
I'm going to go see Mary Poppins. I'm more familiar with that of course

But just wondering if it would still be worth going to see the one with subtitles still

Has anyone been to one with subtitles?

I've been to lots of operas with surtitles (Oslo has individual displays at each seat) and tampere theatre has an app with subtitles.
It was helpful. I had to remind myself now and again to look at the stage though!

Yes, search captioned performances. Most west end shows do them every couple of months.

Hi OP, I work in theatre and almost every show I work on will have captioned performances on specific days throughout the run - this applies to everything from shows in regional producing houses to national tours to west end runs. This usually involves text on a screen above (surtitles) or next to the stage. I believe that some theatres also have hearing loops but I’m afraid this isn’t my area of expertise. I really hope either feature might be something that enables you to get the most out of your trips!

Thank you

I’ve only ever seen subtitles at an Opera but that means they do and can facilitate it in a theatre

I have seen SIX twice. The first showing was with captions. It was really good because with songs you don't always catch exactly what the words are. I think I would have missed half the actual lyrics without the subtitles.
I watch a lot of TV with subtitles so I have learned the art of reading subtitles and watching the action at the same time.

I kind of wish I'd done Wicked with subtitles when I think about it

Had no clue what people were laughing at when they laughed! 🙈

I found Wicked hard to follow even though my hearing is fine, so would have appreciated subtitles! I don’t think the cheap nosebleed seats helped 😂

Needmorelego · 22/05/2025 09:12

I saw Wicked at one of the relaxed performances - I had no clue what was going on.
I loved the film though so one day I might give the stage show a second go.

I wear hearing aids so find it really difficult to catch what’s being said in musicals only. So I’d love subtitles for them.

It’s fine if they have a lovely clear musical theatre voice but they often don’t.

Definitely look for captioned performances - lots of regional venues do these for musicals on tour as well
