Hope this is ok to post here for traffic - already posted in women’s health. I had the mirena fitted back in October. I’m 45, was getting stupidly heavy monthly periods and go suggested it might help. First had an ultrasound to check there weren’t fibroids or any abnormalities. Scan was clear. Anyway wind the clock forward 8 months and while I now don’t have to deal with heavy periods any more, I’m still getting them and also getting spotting/ brown blood on wiping for a couple of weeks minimum each month. GP said to get another scan to check the coil is inserted properly and once we know what’s happening there we will think about next steps. Had the scan today and the coil is exactly where it should be but the nurse scan I g me said my womb lining was thicker than she would expect. She didn’t tell me how thick and I didn’t ask because at that point it didn’t really register. Anyway she said gp may want to biopsy or investigate to rule out cancer. As someone with health anxiety (clue is in the name), that’s put the frighteners up me. I think rationally the nurse could probably just have a better bedside manner and also I am aware that they have to look at all possibilities but really? Another thing for me to worry about?

I had a hysteroscopy to rule out cancer, my lining was 25mm thick which is very abnormal and my womb was enlarged due to all the thick lining. It didn’t hurt and all was fine other than two polyps were removed.
There can be multiple benign reasons why lining is thicker than what they expect, including it might just be normal for you. Get it checked and - I know it is hard with health anxiety - try to recognise when your overthinking this, and limit how much it worries you.

I was in the same situation and was diagnosed with adenomyosis. I have a Mirena and take the mini pill and have very little bleeding now.

So I spoke to my gp and he said that the thickness was 8mm. In October it was 7mm so a very small increase which could even be just because of the time of the month (thinking about to ovulate) or just discrepancy in measurement. I’m seeing a gynae next Thursday anyway so should have some peace of mind.
