Insomnia

Wondering if anyone has insomnia and if so do you take anything prescribed for it. I have insomnia caused by trauma and post traumatic stress (diagnosed) I've felt awful all day today after another sleepless night. Thinking about seeing my gp but not sure if there's much they can do.

Not prescribed but i take magnesium supplements , quite a high dose. Ive slept alot better since starting taking them. They really relaxed me and helped me to get to sleep and stay asleep.

@Crudd99 will look into magnesium, not something I've heard of before. Another sleepless night will try anything at this point.

It needs to be magnesium glycinate if you try that, also look into ashwaganda before bed- both really clear my anxiety and allow me to sleep. I sometimes take magnesium in the morning as well if I can feel myself spiralling and it just stops like I can say to myself “oh well” and carry on… amazing stuff.

I also tried melatonin gummies when I went to America as you can just buy them in any shop… they were great but and don’t feel drugged up or sluggish next day which I have always been scared of with other sleeping tablets. But you need a dr prescription here- so maybe try asking your GP about those, if due to PTSD then you may need something prescription strength to help?? I would have thought that insomnia as part of PTSD would be a pretty well recognised symptom that they can help with?

I bought a SnoozeBand which helps with falling asleep. You can set it to turn off after an hour. I listen to classical music or sleep playlists etc. The Sleeping Forecast from BBC Sounds is also good.

used to be long haul cabin crew and could literally sleep standing up ! Then i hit 45 and it all stopped. I couldn’t stop my mind from racing. I couldn’t fall to sleep , i couldn’t stay asleep . It was horrible. I had time off from work and resorted to sleeping tablets just to function but they made me feel really groggy.
I started to research traditional remedies and found that a blend with chamomile, passionflower and lemon balm They are a good trio for calming your nervous system .
I have a blog on sleep tips and advice on www.WestwoodBotanicals.co.uk
I hope it helps !

I take amitriptyline prescribed by the GP to help me stay asleep. 10mg is all I need. Magnesium Glycinate also helps and helps my DD who has become nocturnal since starting uni.
