I've done it! I've deleted fb and Instagram

I've been wanting to do this for a long time but find the information on fb very useful, none of my friends actually post anything anymore. How far do I go, do I delete mumsnet as well? I just want to spend less time doom scrolling as I have become quite addicted to my phone. For anyone who did this, how long until you no longer missed it?

Why bother. You’ll be back.

why not just try to moderate?

Ontothenextac · 20/05/2025 15:52

Doom scrolling? What is this? Looking for upsetting stories?

Theeasypeasywoman · 20/05/2025 15:53

I want to do this ! I already deleted Instagram last week but I need my fb for few more weeks ( selling house stuff locally before we move abroad). I can't wait to get rid of it honestly because even though I have deleted Instagram, all the reels are coming to fb ( my account was connected) and I am fed up from doom scrolling my life on it 😐

Gekas · 20/05/2025 15:54

I need social media for work so haven’t been able to delete it, but I use a blocker that limits the time I can’t spend on them which helps stop the whole doom scrolling on websites and apps for me and have it set up for mumsnet and other sites too

Fancyflorist · 20/05/2025 15:55

I've done it too - surprised myself by immediately enjoying the freed up time and not missing either platform at all!

Also wondering about deleting Mumsnet now though. I was at a conference last week and during the plenary session with 700+ people in the room the woman next to me was on Mumsnet 😆 it did make me think about my own Mumsnet habit in a critical kind of way....

sunshinedaises · 20/05/2025 15:57

@Ontothenextac doom scrolling is just wasting time endlessly scrolling on social media, nothing upsetting

@Gekas how does this work? Do you give yourself a limit a day say 1 hour and what happens if you have used the hour, can you just not use the app anymore? This could be something to try if I end up downloading them again!

@Fancyflorist how long has it been since you got rid? Glad it's going well for you. I suppose mumsnet should go as well as will just replace fb with this instead and end up using it more to compensate which is what I don't want

I gave them both up years ago. It sometimes feels like it did when I lived without a TV for a year. Mostly great, occasionally you are left out of currents trends or discussions (Zeitgeist (?)) , but you also avoid A LOT of toxicity and time drains.

Now my time is drained by Mumsnet, which can be educational sometimes, enlightening and funny, but also mindless at others. Sometimes I engage with Internet dating.

I listen to daily New York Times podcasts, which I think is an effective use of time.

I ve often thought parenting 2 teenagers, close together in age, is like sitting around a train station, waiting for them. They are often on similar schedules and my parenting, these days, is mostly hanging around in the background. Leaving me with plenty of scroll time.

I must try to remember to choose healthy scrolling options, or better still, join a gym or go for a walk. (touch some grass).

I got rid of instaband Facebook over a year ago. Took about a month for me to stop auto piloting.

wisteriadrive · 20/05/2025 16:10

I did it, fb first in 2015 and instagram about 2018. I don’t miss it to be honest ! Facebook was full of people moaning/bitching/airing dirty laundry and instagram made me feel really insecure…

I am tempted to get TikTok though for hair and make up videos

Gekas · 20/05/2025 16:11

@sunshinedaises i use BlockSite and have custom time limits on, when it’s up and like 5 mins before a pop up comes up warning me and then I can’t use it, obviously I could delete the app, but having the block in place reminds me of how much time I’ve spent on then, it’s massively reduced my screen usage

Best thing I did was leave FB I do have Instagram now but i find it better personally (think it's because I'm private and don't have many on there)

You have to do whats best for you if you want to leave all social media for a while go for it.

4catsonthebed · 20/05/2025 16:33

I ditched FB in '15 and I don't remember missing it.
I never got on tik tok or Instagram it just didn't appeal to me and I found I had more time to do other things other than sitting and scrolling.
I joined MN 6 months and countless scrolling hours before I deleted the account for about a month.
I found myself looking at it still so I finally decided to sign up but now I find I don't look forward to stopping for a break with a cuppa and scrolling the posts as much as I did.
I don't know how it could have changed so much in a month, so maybe it's me 🤷
Good luck sticking with your decision, you must have left for a reason and I hope that whatever you choose will bring you to where you want to be.

Koalafan · 20/05/2025 16:36

I use FB really only for information, especially local stuff. I deleted instagram a while back, and Tiktok and Twitter (when it still was Twitter) too.

coffeecupmorning · 13/11/2025 10:51

when you say deleted Facebook, do you mean deactivated or deleted? I really want to delete it but I have many contacts on messenger that I would have to migrate over to another platform. just wondering how you managed this please?
