Low blood sugar drops

Happens about once every two weeks I’d say, and I know it can be normal but surely not when you’ve actually eaten okay?
this morning had scrambled eggs on toast, walked to the shop 2 hours later and by the time I’ve got home I’m shaking, going hot, need food now kind of thing.
my question is I have pcos, and also had gestational diabetes in one of my pregnancies. Could this be a cause of my blood sugar dropping ? I know pcos can cause insulin resistance so I’m wondering if it could be connected.

Other way round, insulin resistance is one of the causes of PCOS. If you are reacting like this and sure it is your blood sugar, then you probably have insulin resistance and are probably pre diabetic.
Hop on over to phcuk.org and take at DR Unwin's advice on preventing diabetes.

Best wishes, and even if you are skeptical it is worth taking a look at the impact that insulin resistance can have on health.

Sounds like it could be Reactive Hypoglycemia.

I have had drops in blood sugars on and off since I was a teenager. I have been tested for diabetes many times and tests always come back normal. I had gestational diabetes twice and have had yearly checks for diabetes since, which is still normal.

Might be worth going to your GP to discuss. I saw this online which may be helpful :

Thank for the replies.
I am supposed to have my bloods checked once a year for diabetes since gestational diabetes but it’s only been done once and that was 6 weeks after birth !! I may call the surgery and arrange one…
I don’t have any velvety dark skin anywhere but do have more and more little skin tags popping up.
I definitely have a rounded middle (I look pregnant and skinny legs) but I thought that was pcos to blame, so seems it could be if insulin resistance causes pcos…

This seems familiar for me ! But would it happen after every carb heavy meal?

If you were insulin resistant your sugar levels would be rising not dropping. I’m T1D and when I tank I do get the symptoms you describe, I get shaky, start sweating and feel a little disorientated compared to high sugars which just make me fatigued. Its definitely worth looking into reactive hypoglycaemia

I’m the same OP. I just got a glucose monitor to wear for a couple of weeks (bought it online) to see what is going on. It’s been really useful to be able to see what is suddenly increasing and dropping my blood sugar. So far it looks like coffee when on an empty stomach, and pretty much anything that has a GI of over 35. My blood sugar also dips low overnight which explains my regular 3am waking.

I’m going to have to totally overhaul the way I eat to be low carb, and when I do have carbs to make sure there is enough protein and fat with it.

I have reactive hypoglycaemia, the pill made mine so much worse, came off it and now I only get it the week before I'm due on defo linked to hormones. It's just diet controlled

GreenFressia · 20/05/2025 23:18

I eat two breakfasts (oats and eggs) and make sure I add healthy fats e.g. seeds, evoo, Avocado etc, as keeps me fuller.

wisteriadrive · 21/05/2025 13:25

It’s happened again after eating my lunch. I had a cheese salad pitta with tortilla chips on the side and a Guac dip. I would have thought the Guac would have helped slowing the carb absorption down. So if it is reactive hypoglycemia then it’s caused by too much insulin? Don’t get it

Seems there is a link with pcos ! Would metformin help this ? I was on it years ago ttc and it did wonders for my health, I lost a good amount of weight on it

I get this OP but the GP has been no help in getting to the bottom of it. I have endometriosis and an underactive thyroid for reference.

I often find I have these episodes if I have either eaten a high sugar meal such as jam on toast, as I assume the there’s a higher drop in my sugar levels, or when I’ve eaten something low calorie like a salad.

Last week i had a salad for lunch in work and out of the blue when getting in the car to drive home I felt really hot, shaky, my fingers tingle, cold sweats, slight nausea… I usually carry cereal bars with me but I had nothing. Luckily I found a pac of sweets and had a couple, enough so i could drive home. It’s scary when it happens, the first time was accompanied by heartburn and I actually thought I was having a heart attack!
