How can I freshen up my duvet?

I am in Sydney and it is cold (by my standards anyway) and damp so I have just fished out my Winter weight duvet. It smells a bit musty but the weather is not nice enough to just let it air outside. I was thinking maybe I could put it in the tumble drier but is there anything I could put in with it to make it smell nice or does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

I'd wash it first add some nice fabric softener and then put it in the tumble dryer with one of those sheets

Sounds like a wash is in order! If that's difficult to fit in today you could put it on top of your summer duvet for now

We take ours to a laundrette for a service wash and dry, the machines are much bigger than standard, I can just about fit a single duvet in mine, no way could I fit a king size. You should get it back the same day. Alternatively, buy a new one, but do not sleep under a foisty duvet!

Thanks. Sounds like the consensus is that it needs a wash so I might check out the service wash option. One of my arms is a bit knackered so wrangling a king size duvet myself doesn’t appeal 😁

I chuck my feather duvet in the dryer once a fortnight on the warm / freshen up setting for 30 mins or so. I find that’s enough
i have in the past been known to spray anti bacterial Febreze on it and let it air dry which gives it a nice smell

I dont really have outdoor space, so I strip the duvet and wrangle the whole thing over the clothes horse and chuck it in the sunniest room, with the window open (if it’s freezing, I just shut the door to that room so the rest of the place stays warm). In holland, it was super standard for people to hang their sort of duvet-equivalent half out the upstairs (I presume bedroom) window. I believe sunlight kills some bacteria 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Do duvets actually fit in the washing machine and tumble dryer.
Im going to try and stuff mine in tomorrow now just to see 🤣🤣 ( although as the dryer dates back to the 70s I’m guessing it’s not big enough )

So Everyone. If you’re still awake and to @Flatandhappy whose probably having lunch are we talking double duvets can fit?

I have an 8Kg machine and wash my 4.5tog fairy regularly so it depends on the capacity of the machine. I run hot but if I needed more warmth I’d put a throw over it
Having said that I’ve just bought a coverless duvet which is bliss( I posted a thread!)

Not sure where you are in sydney but there is likely a laundrette with industrial sized machines, or a drop of laundry place nearby, I would have it washed and tumbled, it’s going to be wet for the foreseeable 😩 so you’ll just be more cold if you use it as is..

I'm there with you OP. This weather is miserable!! Heavy rain forecast again from tonight. Hopefully it dries out and sun comes out on the weekend.

@BobShark don’t worry, we all have electric blankets 😁 Best things ever. I think the dry cleaners I use might launder duvets (have to remember to call them doonas).
