Toddler not peed in 30hrs

Fingerscrossed22 · 19/05/2025 01:24

Hi all,

My toddler hasn't peed in 30hrs.

Currently in childrens hospital, been checked but the Dr seems unconcerned.

She has drank and eaten v.little in this time- stats are normal as are all other checks.

Toddler was lathargic all yesterday but perked up by tea time but I still came in as no urine passed at that point -22 hrs.

Has anyone else had this?

Currently waiting an hr extra, on advice of Dr, to see if ' anything changes' before being sent home

Has your dc had a scan?

DO NOT let them discharge you until she wee’s

No weeing is a symptom of Sepsis
Has she had blood tests?

I definitely wouldn’t be happy with that and think you were right to go in. Have you tried giving her ice lollies to suck on for fluid, that can be a good trick

No nothing other than the usual checks- Ears, throat, chest

Please ask them about sepsis.

Tried ice lollies, fruit, the lot.
Dc had finished 1 full bottle of drink (350ml?) After 12 hrs.
Prior to the 12 hrs of 1x bottle, no fluid for a good 8 hrs.
Yes wont leave until pees , Im shoved in the waiting room, only 1x here cooped up on 1 of those small hard leather bucket sofas. Dc comfy sleeping on it fully atleast.
Still no urine passed- just hit the 31 hr mark

My baby would go all day 12+ hours not peeing.
It used to really worry me because he wouldn’t drink or would only have a few sips of milk.

Turns out he was severely autistic. He didn’t produce melatonin. He wasn’t sleeping and that threw everything else out.

Have they not run any blood tests at all??

Wishiwasatailor · 19/05/2025 03:17

Ask for a bladder scan, takes seconds and will show if her bladder is getting full and kidneys are working

CucumberCool · 19/05/2025 03:20

Have you heard of Martha's rule OP? If you think she is medically deteriorating and you are not being listened to by the ward team, you can ring the critical care outreach team who can assess your dc with fresh eyes.

You will need to speak to the ward team first, if not satisfied please ask to speak to the ward manager or nurse in charge before self referring to CCOT.

There should be info about on the hospital website.

Has there been any changes in her condition?

Ellephanting · 19/05/2025 03:24

This is very worrying and needs fully investigating. Do stand your ground @Fingerscrossed22 do not be fobbed off. I really hope your child is ok.

anicecuppateaa · 19/05/2025 05:18

This is bizarre and I cannot believe they would be planning to discharge you. Fwiw I have been in this situation and pushed the lack of weeing too late. My dd was very unwell (different circumstances to yours).

Ponderingwindow · 19/05/2025 05:27

My toddler did this once when we switched nappies temporarily. She never once used the new kind. Once we got a regular one on her she peed within a minute. Soaked right through it.

she got an ASD diagnosis years later. It was only in retrospect that I can chalk up this very stressful day+ to her being able to tell the difference and simply decide it wasn’t appropriate to go.

Not yet still.

Thanks for the replies all.
Sorey to hear some of you have been in same situ.

We were admitted on ward at 2.30am.
She still hasn't peed.
Obs have been fine all night.
Ive mentioned to the nurse re sepsis.
Dr hasn't been been around again yet.
Dc had drank maybe 50mls since 11.30pm.

I will insist on bloods and scan (nurse did mention bladder scan , unsure if will happen yet!)

They don't like doing bloods on children because it's traumatic, but she absolutely needs one now to see how dehydrated she is, and probably to get access to put her on a drip too. Are you just in A and E?

Catsinaflat · 19/05/2025 06:09

Take him to the bathroom, take shoes and socks off and stand him in the sink and run water (as if he was in the bath). Toddlers often pee in the bath. Do they need a sample of his wee? If not just leave the nappy on.

Springadorable · 19/05/2025 06:10

You probably won't see a doctor until a few hours after shift hand over (so mid morning) so if she changes at all grab a nurse urgently so they can call the on call one. Best of luck

We live 1hr 10 from nearest hospital with peads unit but you have to go to A&E first.
I arrived at A&E 8pm, (after calling 111 15 hrs after no pee, they advised A&E at 24 hrs if not peed ) transferred to Peads at 10pm, seen at 12.30Am , admitted at 2.30am.

Yes she definitely needs bloods, will insist

OP posts:
Wishiwasatailor · 19/05/2025 06:14

She doesn't necessarily need bloods. You definitely don't need a blood test to tell how dehydrated you are.

the bladder scan is the first logical test on an otherwise well child its non traumatic and is an immediate result. Most paeds wards will have one it's a very quick and easy test it's like an ultrasound which gives you the amount of mls in your bladder.

I am surprised they haven't encouraged you to give more oral fluids. I would be pushing for her to drink as what goes in must come out eventually

As soon as Dc wakes will definetly try this- I ran the tap over her hands last night, but made no difference

Yes Ive been pushing the drinks but she simply isn't taking much, Dr is holding out on her taking more too.
Currently still fast asleep.
No fluid since 1am when fell asleep.
Ive tried waking her through the night but she is pretty exhausted now , will keep pushing tjough

Wishiwasatailor · 19/05/2025 06:18

take the nappy off whilst she's asleep rub a cold wet tissue under his belly button towards her groin it stimulates the bladder and being asleep she'll be more relaxed to wee.
