Sickness bug/food poisoning on holiday!! 😫

I know this is a kind of how long is a piece of string question but does anyone know how quickly sickness things can pass and if you are likely to feel better then get bad again?

So my husband and I are on holiday and due to come home today. In fact we need to check out the hotel room in just under 2 hours. He started feeling unwell last night before dinner. It came on quite rapidly and he went from feeling a bit queasy to being very sick within about an hour. He was being pretty ill for 4 hours (he just camped in the bathroom as couldn’t really move much) and then he felt well enough to crawl into the “kids” bed. (It’s a family room and there’s just the two of us so he slept in there).

He did actually manage to get a fair bit of sleep. And he’s woken up today feeling like he’s been run over by a bus but so far not that bad. I am aware this could change!! 😬

So. Do people think we risk starting the journey home? (Driving. So don’t need to necessarily be in contact with other people unless he needs the loo at a services). It’s a 4 hour drive. The hotel is full (we have told them the situation but they said they can’t extend check out or let us book one extra night). We could look for another hotel nearby-ish but most places won’t let you check in until about 3pm and quite honestly we’d by home by then anyway! I’m also worried about starting to feel unwell myself half way back!! 😬

Does it sound like he’s caught a sickness bug or more like food poisoning type thing? As I said it was quite a rapid onset. Very violent illness for about 4 hours. Then just feeling knackered and battered. He does feel slightly warm to the touch but I don’t think actually feverish as such. After the initial sickness last night he said he felt freezing cold. (I’m sure the fact he was lying on the bathroom floor wouldn’t have helped that though!!) We ate mostly the same things but obviously that means nothing really as one burger isn’t identical to another one etc!

What a nightmare! 🤢😬🤣

Can you drive? Drive back making as many toilet stops as required. He'd prefer being home and in his own bed i imagine

If you were flying and coming into contact with other people you would have to try and find somewhere to isolate there (I know you’ve said there’s nowhere else though, what a nightmare!) but given you’re driving personally I’d dose up with paracetamol and immodium and bring a load of plastic bags incase he needs to be sick or shit in some bushes if you can’t find a toilet anywhere. Totally less than ideal obviously and generally the advice is to avoid immodium if it’s a bug or food poisoning as it’s better to get it all out of your system but needs must….!

Yes I’ll be driving back so I think the best bet is to load him up with plastic bags and make a run for it. He hasn’t been sick for about 8 hours at least so I’m hoping it’s mostly over. I think we’ll start the drive and we’ll stop a lot but avoid actually going into services unless he really really has to. The stopping will just be for fresh air and a break etc.

I don't think this issue will be a problem for others and the fact your driving is a gift your totally independent and can stop wherever you like. Make the run for it

Get home - you drive and he has a puke bowl. I'd just go now!

Phunkychicken · 17/05/2025 10:05

I would advise looking at the route first as some motorways have miles and miles between services. I have frequent stomach issues and have had to drive back from holiday before from Tesco to Tesco. And the Imodium melts work pretty much instantly.

Best of luck

Well we made it home! It wasn’t as bad as it could have been at all. Husband pretty much slept the entire way. We stopped once for petrol only. Only I got out the car and paid at the pump. He’s in bed. It’s been over 12 hours since the last puking so I’m hopeful he’s over the worst. I’m still fine will be hiding out in the spare room tonight just in case and will just check on him regularly. I really hope I’ve escaped this one! 😷😬 thanks everyone!
