Will Marks and Spencer survive?

It’s hard to imagine the full scale of the cyber attack and the impact on their business.

yes, annoying for the shoppers, but they must be losing millions in daily revenue online, and I doubt that’s being backfilled by increased physical footfall.

stock levels are unpredictable - understandably - so confidence is low.

shoppers are creatures of habit, and change is habit forming.

So my question is, do you think M and S is at risk?

I don’t care if someone on the dark web knows I bought some pants in 2023. What will they actually do with that information?

I don’t care. I truly don’t. They have the money to absorb it. My personal data, address, name, etc., has been compromised and is now on the dark web. It’ll be up for sale. What’s going to happen with that? How will I be compensated for that?

Your information is probably already floating around on the ‘dark web’ as you call it (trust me, your pedestrian bank details are off brand on the dark web) from absolutely anything you’ve ever signed up for online, regardless of this M&S incident.

Data isn’t just leaked at the time of a cyber attack. You’re also responsible for sharing your data in the first place. Check the small print when you sign up. Every time you look at anything on social media, or post on any platform (including on here) you’re handing over data. Your banking institution is susceptible to attack any time too etc, etc.

But again, this is now the fault of M&S. and they don’t seem to be doing anything to rectify the situation

I think we can say without being present in their HQ that they ARE doing something about it.

This ‘where there’s blame, there’s a claim’ approach you’re hinting at is murky.

MrsPlantagenet · 17/05/2025 15:22

I just popped to my local M&S Simply Food. Had to wait for a parking space, shop was packed, shelves were full. In contrast to our local coop where the shelves are almost bare.

On paper, the coop seems more proactive in dealing with the cyber attack, but in reality, it looks worse than M&S.

The most likeliest thing is that a scam call centre will phone you appearing to be from M&S.

Yes, actually quite reasonable stock levels for mid year. I was pleasantly surprised. But just as well really, since my Plan B had been order online if there was nothing in DCs size!

Just on bus on way back now and they did have some despite the web site saying they didn't have that size in stock in that store. I wouldn't have gone if you hadn't mentioned you'd got some, so DS thanks you for not having to wear the same pair of trousers all week (that are a size too small as well).

Of course they are! Why do you think they’ve shut everything down?

And I won’t believe a word they say…

To be honest Mumsnet managed that with my personal details a few years ago, along with the personal details of lots of other users.

Seamond · 17/05/2025 16:37

My details are probably already on the dark web, courtesy of Capita and a few other companies. Soon everyone's will be on there, one way or another.

I think most people will be glad to get back to m&s when things are sorted out.

This.

Compensation to all customers would be a start. And apology for their lies.

I don't know if you are genuinely anxious or trying to get compensation? If you are anxious, rest assured the details shared with M&S isn't anything new, data breached have happened for years. If you buy online then I guarantee data about you has been leaked in the past, Google data breached. If you just want compensation I think you will have to prove actual losses or harm. Have you had a loss or had impact as a result?

You seem to insist they are lying...perhaps no one can convince you so don't shop there again, cut up your sparks card and ask them to delete your details. I'm sure they won't miss you.

EvelynBeatrice · 17/05/2025 17:36

mummytoonetryingfortwo · 17/05/2025 09:45

Why on earth would she do that. This is entirely their fault, they refused to invest in IT.

Because marks is a big U.K. employer and it’s not in our interests for it to fold

657904I · 17/05/2025 17:38

M&S is the one business that I want to survive & thrive. I’d be devastated if this cripples them

That’s on them not investing then. The royal family should not exist to rescue private businesses.

They told customers that no data had been breached. Three weeks later, data has been breached. It’s unacceptable

GingerBeverage · 17/05/2025 17:48

Its not a blame game. Its a practical one of doing what we all can to support the British economy.

Can you explain to me as well please what the risk of my hypothetical purchase of pants being common knowledge is?

I don't buy online from them but they do have my email address from when I have been in store and ordered something in a size they didnt have for later pick up.
