Cannabis plants at window

AInightingale · 16/05/2025 14:56

What would you think if a neighbour (male, lives alone, divorced or separated with kids) started displaying what looked like cannabis plants (seedlings in pots, about six inches) on a bedroom windowsill?
There are about ten of them, definitely look the part. I know he smokes weed as I've smelt it outside quite a lot when he's in the garden.
It's not really my business and I don't think I'd inform on him if it's personal use, but are people really that brazen that they'll display it like this?! Isn't it still illegal even in small amounts? Am in UK.

Wouldn't bother me tbh. What do you think he's going to do with them?

whirlyhead · 16/05/2025 15:34

I live in Spain, and we are allowed to grow 2 plants each legally. Are you allowed similar in England?

Anyway, it wouldn't bother me, as i grew up in NZ where it was common to have marijuana plants in your garden and it was a constant fight to keep the possums off them (lots of stoned possums over there...!!)

I still fondly recall my mother when I was at university staring thoughtfully at several plants growing in my garden, then offering advice on how to improve their growth!

AInightingale · 16/05/2025 16:21

Was under the impression that it was still illegal in the UK to grow any plants, the law is heavy-handed if anything.
I'd be a bit pissed off at living next to a commercial operation with fire risk etc but he's obviously not doing that if he's so casual about displaying a few at the window. Just got a brass neck probably!

Generally, natural cannabis cultivation in the UK is rare for personal growers and unheard of for commercial operations. For the obvious reason that having something with considerable street value on open display is probably not a good idea.

If you now know that your neighbour is likely to have a good stash of a highly tradeable illegal substance in his house, then you can be sure the local community will also know.

Personally I would be much more concerned about the attentions of local criminal elements who will not be reticent about taking what they want over any obstructions real or perceived

AInightingale · 16/05/2025 16:57

It is odd, like he wants to be caught or draw people's attention to it.
Maybe I've got it wrong and he's raising tomato plants 😀but they've got the jaggedy-looking leaf edge!

Cannabis is quite a distinctive plant. Although if it's at the fan leaf stage, then really a window sill isn't the best place for it.

It all sounds a bit odd. I've posted a guide, just in case. However I'd be happy to lose money on a bet that it's not a line of Southern Marigold (although that would be a great name for a cannabis strain).

10 Plants That Look Like Marijuana, But Aren’t

There are many plants that look like marijuana, including Japanese Maples, Southern Marigolds, Spider Flowers, and more.

AInightingale · 16/05/2025 18:58

Thank you @TheUser420 . Marigolds I do remember now look very like dope plants. I very much doubt they are flowers or vegetables though given the state of his garden (collapsed fence, grass a foot long, nettles and a conifer that's been lying across it since it fell during Storm Dara).

I mean if anyone's home screamed 'weedhead' it's his.

If it’s only a couple little plants and it’s for him I wouldn’t say anything. He’s not Pablo Escobar.

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 16/05/2025 19:07

Doubt he's trying to draw attention to them - probably just a sunny spot to grow. Maybe it's better than having dealers turn up regularly to sell to him.

user1471453601 · 16/05/2025 19:07

At this time of year, every window in our house (with the exception of my living room, you have to draw a line somewhere 😁) has seedlings of different sizes on them. Some may even have jagged edges.

And one of my family smokes weed too.

Not one of the seedlings are cannabis. The gardeners in my house would see it as a waste of space, after all, weed is neither hard to get nor is it that expensive.

So, to answer your question, I'd thinking nothing at all about your neighbour.

DiaryofWimpy · 16/05/2025 19:18

My mums neighbour has a growth going every year. He has a set up in his shed and spare bedroom and brings his plants out on days like these. He uses it for personal use

Personally I wouldn't take a plant indoors once it had been outdoors.

Also you don't want your plant getting fertilised, and cannabis pollen is everywhere.

Doggymummar · 16/05/2025 20:39

I did jury service on a drugs house. He's not going to get anything saleable on his windowsill. He'll need ventilation, heat and irrigation

SaintAgatha · 16/05/2025 20:41

“Weedhead”. 😅😅

Heat ? Not really. In fact the ventilation is used to get rid of heat if you are using old school HPS lamps.
Extra ventilation - definitely. Ideally with a carbon filter.
Irrigation ? Well a shower a weeks worth at most.

If some gets caught growing a couple of plants, then they have managed to avoid an internets worth of advice.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 16/05/2025 21:00

It wouldn’t worry me. I think most people down my road smoke weed. Everyone’s nice and it’s a pretty chill place to live.

Helpmechooseausername · 16/05/2025 21:31

Some plants growing in his windowsill are for personal use. They'll never produce enough to sell. I wouldn't think of it as 'displaying' them - they're simply on the windowsill because then they can get some sunshine!

I would far rather people who wanted to smoke weed were able to grow enough for their own use in their windowsill than having to buy weed that has been produced commercially and comes with all the potential issues with drug gangs etc., etc..

Maddy70 · 16/05/2025 21:34

Wouldn't give two shits. However it's legal to grow in my country. But successful plants need light

AInightingale · 17/05/2025 00:03

I am in Ireland, the north, and the houses are south facing, so that's about fifteen hours of sunlight a day, and it has been exceptionally warm and sunny.

The electricity prices are crazy so maybe he's just taking advantage of the weather before he has to put them under a heat lamp.

OP posts:
Nancycat · 17/05/2025 00:10

I'd ask him if I could have a try when it's ready.

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 17/05/2025 00:41

I'd think that... he was definitely having a go at growing weed! And yeah, people are that brazen now.

HelpMeGetThrough · 17/05/2025 05:15

I’d be asking for some cuttings and grow some too.

SaintAgatha · 17/05/2025 07:48

I truly don’t get the horror about this. Alcohol is a far more dangerous drug than a few plants someone’s grown in their house.

You don't use "heat lamps". If you choose to use High Pressure Sodium lights, then they also throw out a lot of heat as well as light. And normally that heat is a problem. Cannabis doesn't mind temperatures up to 30C, but it isn't a tropical plant by any stretch of the imagination. (It originated in the Himalayas).

Depending on your setup in the UK, you might use HPS lights to provide heat and light if you are growing in an unheated space (e.g. shed) - you want to keep temperatures around about 18-25C.

Obviously a lot of heat and light = a lot of electricity. LED lamps are much much more efficient with much less heat. Not great news for fans of police helicopter action, not for people who think all growers steal electricity. but if you grow with LEDs you need a warmer environment in the UK.

If it all seems a bit much, there are plenty of online sites and hydroponic suppliers who can advise.

A lot of UK home growers motivation is simply to avoid mixing with dodgy types. However there is a large contingent who also don't trust anything you buy on the street. Lord alone knows what's in that.
