Training courses - claim back from tax?

I’ve recently taken a second job. It’s zero hours and involves training/ coaching.

There are paid courses I need to do on an ongoing basis to keep evolving my skills.

Is it possible to offset training courses against any tax or NI I will pay?

Yes you can claim the cost of the training courses for refreshing your skills. You cannot claim for new skills, but the courses you describe are within the HMRC guidelines. You cannot reduce your NIC, but you can get a tax refund.

Do not use one of the companies that purport to do this for you, they are pretty much scammers. Some claim for all sorts, take their fee then when it turns out the items claimed were ineligible, you have to repay the tax and you dont get a refund from the company.

You can claim this yourself here https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees

Claim tax relief for your job expenses

Claiming tax relief on expenses you have to pay for your work, like uniforms, tools, travel and working from home costs.
