How on earth do I speak to a human at the DVLA???

My eldest DC is visually impaired. The eye doctor at hospital has said they are borderline for being legal to drive or not based on latest peripheral vision test. They also recommended we speak to the DVLA for advice as they also have cerebral palsy.

So I spent over an hour trying to speak to a person this afternoon but was either in a queue or being redirected back to the options menu.

Can anybody advise me on how I actually get to speak to someone? I can’t report results online as they don’t have a driving licence

try the webchat. don't bother faffing with trying to explain to the robot, just keep typing 'speak to an advisor' until it puts you through to one x

I recently got round another government agency phone system by saying "I want to speak to an agent" three times. If you happen to get through to a person the first thing you need to ask is "what do I say next time to get through to a real person". That's how I found out.

Love the DVLA helpline.... on hold for over an hour and then recorded message telling me to try again later. I never got through. I appreciate this may well not be an option OP but I ended up just writing to them and sending recorded delivery.

So my husband has to go through the farce of applying for a driving licence to get turned down and gets the fee refunded to get his free buss pass. I suspect you need to apply for a driving licence including all the medical information for him to have a decision made on if he can have a driving licence.

ILOVECHAMBERS · 18/05/2025 01:45

You need to find their nearest office

ILOVECHAMBERS · 18/05/2025 01:46

Book them in for a RDAC Regional Driving Assessment Centre. That way you can get advice about whether they can drive and if any adaptations may be required.

Not with the DVLA but on other automated lines, no matter the question I just keep repeating ‘customer advisor’ or ‘customer services’ over and over and it works most of the time

We were told you can’t do this without a GP referral and our GP won’t refer because it’s not in their remit. Been doing those same roundabout for 4 years

Am optician or eye doctor at the hospital should be able to clarify if your DS has the minimum requirement eyesore to be able to drive
