Are there any nurses / medical people here? What is this? *Warning, photo attached

My DS age 10 fell over today on some gravel and cut just below his right knee. This cut is about the size of a 5p piece.

what is the white thing? I thought it was originally gravel so in a bath to clean him up, we tried to extract it with tweezers. It became apparent it is definitely attached so I’m pretty sure this isn’t a foreign object. It didn’t soften like dead skin would. It’s sinewy- could it be tendons/ ligaments? The wound is just below his knee.

I’m still not 100% sure if there is a tiny bit of gravel left in there. I’ll see how it is in the morning. Just interested if anyone could tell me what this actually is!

You could more chuck millions at the NHS & it wouldn’t help. People going to A&E when they don’t need to HAS had a big impact. Most people at A&E shouldn’t be there.

I

Which is why they’re waiting so long. I doubt any doctor would say a child with an open wound and seemingly connective tissue sticking out of it shouldn’t be in A&E.

Agree, i’m sure they wouldn’t. However, my reply was to all your other possible reasons about huge waits rather than one of the big reasons. The general public abuse the NHS, particularly A&E.

The NHS is not solely there to provide emergency care. It is there to provide all medical care. It cannot be abused.

A&E is definitely abused!

I wouldn’t leave that overnight tbh.

If he can walk, it’s unlikely to be a cartilage or tendon. It needs looking at, but the tissue will be swollen which may make it appear worse than it is.
i would cover with a loose dry dressing until he is seen

We're talking about specifically ED departments. Which are absolutely not for all medical care, and can be and are abused.

I wouldn't leave that until tomorrow, I have a very nasty small scar in a similar position after falling on gravel that has bothered me all my life because it was about 10 hours before being taken to doctor and it was too late to stitch it. I'd also say that looks like tendon or ligament that may require fixing. (I've seen them in operating threatres as a student).
