Weight loss and calf size.

I've managed to lose 7.5 stone over the last few years (first 5.5 stone with diet alone and last 2 stone with weight loss injections). I'm keen to reduce my calf measurement as I have several pairs of boots that are standard or curvy calf measurement. (I bought them dead cheap in a sale in the hope that I'd eventually be able to get into them!).
I can just about get the curvy ones on,but the zip stops short by about 2 inches, the standard ones, nowhere near. I tried the curvy ones on when I'd lost the first 5.5 stone, then again more recently after losing another 2 stone, but there was no difference! I have another 3 stone to lose so I'm hoping that by then,my calf size will have reduced enough to get them on.
Has anyone else had this, with zero reduction in size despite losing another 2 stone? And can I realistically expect to have lost enough off my calves when I've lost another 3 stone?

I've been on Mounjaro and have lost about 4.5 stone. I've noticed how much slimmer my legs are - it quite surprised me! I've always wanted to wear knee-high boots in the winter - I'm so looking forward to that now.

JohnTheRevelator · 15/05/2025 17:58

MounjaroMounjaro Same here! Knee length boots have been a bit of an obsession of mine for years, probably because I couldn't wear the damn things due to never finding a pair that fitted! I've lost countless hours scrolling through black, suede knee length boots on various websites! I'm so looking forward to being able to actually wear some.

MounjaroMounjaro · 15/05/2025 18:08

I reckon you'll be wearing them by late September! It's so exciting, thinking about being able to wear things that you weren't able to before - that's how I feel, anyway. Have you found out what suits you? I'm still struggling a bit with that. I used to wear a lot of black and also a lot of high-necked tops - buttoned shirts, polo necks, that kind of thing, and they look awful on me now.

I totally agree - it's amazing being able to wear stuff that I wouldn't have dreamt of wearing at my heaviest (was 21 stone 4lbs,I'm now 13 stone 10 lbs). I still favour black and dark colours though! I think I've found my style,I love wearing jeggings and T shirts or jumpers, and trainers. I'd never have dared to wear jeggings at my fattest! I always wore skirts,or occasionally dresses as I was so self-conscious about my fat thighs and bum.

I'd love to see what you wear as you're losing weight. I agree about the jeggings - they're so comfortable now. I'm wearing a size 12 now, which is unbelievable, really. I know they're bigger than when I was young, many years ago, but I don't care!

henlake7 · 15/05/2025 20:06

I bet you will be able to get into the wide fit ones but I wouldn't hold your breath for the standard fit ones!
I've lost a similar amount of weight and am now a size 8/10 but I still can't get my calves into regular fit boots (I even struggle with leggings if they aren't stretchy enough).
I was even thinner when younger but still needed the curvier fit boots.
Some of us are just 'blessed' with calves like Popeye's forearms!😆

Brilliant job on the weight loss, that’s amazing!

Re calf size, try to wait. One of my legs swelled up massively with a dvt then post weight loss, I can fit that leg into long boots, but not the other! 🤬I have lymphedema tho, so am unsurprised.

As you know, Simply Be has a good variety of different widths but I’d try to hold off til you’re nearer target. I curse the closure of Evans, I can’t find any high street stores that have suitable boots to try. Duo boots are good (but serious money!) as is the Wide Boot Company on Facebook. They’re riding boots but have a decent variety. Have a look at Jileon’s country boots too, although they don’t look like ‘proper’ country boots. Ariat Grasmere (can you tell I’m horsey?!) are also wide, but again, serious money and you probably don’t want to have to spend that much when you might not be finished losing weight.

RentalWoesNotFun · 15/05/2025 20:14

The difference for me was piling on about four stone before I could no longer get my boots zipped up. So presumably if I lose that I can get back into my old faithfuls. I kept them just in case. I guess we are all different shapes and sizes though.

Blueeeee · 15/05/2025 20:15

My calves were big to support my weight, when I lost weight they remained kind of big as if I were a ballerina or athlete but with time, my calf muscle got smaller, it wasn't just losing weight it was also needing to lose the muscle in my calf and that took time for the muscle to 'atrophy' a bit as they are no longer carrying the heavy weight. It's like muscles shrinking after not lifting for a while. I could wear Clarks knee length leather boots at about 11st (I'm 5ft2), when I gained again from 12st they would not zip up and I was ordering knee boots from Simply Be and Yours.
So since you're in the 13st I reckon 2 more stones or so and maybe months of being smaller so the muscle shrinks a bit.

Tricky. I’m lighter now than ever yet my left leg is still too wide to get on boots I wore when a stone heavier when I lost weight previously. As people keep telling me, you can't choose where the weight goes from.

angelinawasrobbed · 15/05/2025 21:38

I’ve gone down a shoe size!

and I can fit one leg into my over the knee boots, but not the other (old ankle injury)

Oh yes, jeggings have been an absolute revelation to me! I can remember when I wore jeans back in the early 1980s, when I was 16 - 18 years old (and a size 12!) and finding them hellishly uncomfortable. I could never understand the idea that jeans were comfortable, casual clothing. I know that I couldn't wait to get out of the damn things at the end of the day! But jeggings,OMG! They are brilliant. I put them on and literally forget I'm wearing them, they are so comfortable.

That's such a shame. Do you think you'll ever be able to wear them again?

angelinawasrobbed · 17/05/2025 09:37

II don’t know - but my daughter’s beady eye is on them …

so the point is probably moot!

MounjaroMounjaro · 17/05/2025 13:25

Ha, I have a daughter like that! When I get the boots I want, I'll have to sleep in them!

Toooldforthisbollocks · 17/05/2025 13:40

Some people just have bigger calves. Even when I was a size 10 I struggled to fit into standard sized boots.

45Degrees · 17/05/2025 13:50

Calf size can also be affected by your gait. It you tend to walk on your toes (tipped forward) the calf muscles are working harder, and grow bigger. If you have a good heel strike when you walk that's less likely.

Disturbia81 · 17/05/2025 15:12

My legs are always the last thing to properly shrink

Ah that's interesting. I have a feeling I probably walk 'funny' as I have arthritis in my knees and hips.

Really? I am amazed at that. I always assumed that anyone who was a slim size 10 would have no trouble fitting into a standard calf size!

I wish! I dont even think my calves look that big but they still wont fit in regular boots. Any kind of tapered trouser also looks ridiculous coz they pull tight across my calves.
I suppose we are just more used to hearing people talk about big boobs or hips....not big arms or legs!!😆

Size 10 looks different depending on height, my short friend is a size 10 but with big legs

TorturedParentsDepartment · 17/05/2025 17:58

I measure each month as I lose weight - although I've lost loads of cm on my boobs and waist - I've only lost a couple of cm off my calves - which were on the "robust" side anyway. I'm sure as time goes on it'll even up where the weight comes off, but I'm never sure I'll get to rocking the knee high boots unless they're in very chunky sizes.
