Motability Scheme and high rate pip

Georgieporgie29 · 13/05/2025 19:47

I am currently in receipt of high rate pip and whilst I hadn’t thought about using the money for a car, my current car is getting old and I thought maybe now is the time to change it.

I only have 2 years left on my claim and am worried with the latest news that I will not be awarded it again when it is up for renewal.

I wondered if anybody who knows about this scheme would be able to answer a few questions for me please?

If I get an electric car and they install a charge point at home, do I have to pay for that? And will I be able to keep it after the 2 years? (The charge point)

Is it pretty straight forward to get a car on the scheme? Do I just fill out a form/visit a dealership?

What happens when/if my claim isn’t renewed and I have to return the car, do I have a period of time to do this?

Do I still accrue no claims with the insurance? I currently have over 20 years.

Are there any downsides I should be aware of?

thanks for any answers

Your best bet is to go the Motability scheme website, as that will answer any questions you have.

Thank you both, I appreciate your help.

I have a Motability car. Something to consider if you only have a 2 year award left is that you are insured through the scheme and you don’t accrue no claims - so when you leave the scheme your insurance may be higher. Some insurance companies do accept the motability scheme as proof of no claims but they tend to be more expensive anyway. Essentially if you have a short award and feel it may not be renewed just something to be aware of. (I have an ongoing / indefinite award now but this was a major thing i thought about as I had a long history of no claims).

@Picklechicken yes that is what I was afraid of. My insurance this year on my car was less than £200 and I’m worried that if I can’t use my no claims discount afterwards it will be too high.
