How much petrol money should I offer?

I am going to a gig 20 miles away with a friend. Her sister is going to take us and pick us up at the end of the night so it's 80 miles driving for her. How much should I offer?
TIA

Find out how much a taxi would cost there and back and offer half that?

CousinBob · 13/05/2025 16:46

Ask your friend how much her sister would like?

OohOohOohOohOoooh · 13/05/2025 16:48

I should add we would be getting the bus if she couldn't take us not a taxi.

Depending on car/fuel etc petrol would be around £20 for 80 miles so I’d half that with your friend so £10 then add maybe another 10, 15 on top

Shade17 · 13/05/2025 16:52

Your share of the fuel is about £7, or you could use the HMRC rate and it’s £18. You could add something for her time, maybe £15. I think you and friend should give her £30 each.

Overthebow · 13/05/2025 16:52

I’d give £20 each and a bottle of wine or chocolates to say thank you

BasketballHoopla · 13/05/2025 16:52

If you can afford it I would give £20. Definitely covers the cost of the petrol and while you don’t need to pay for her time it’s nice not to be stingy when she’s doing you a favour.

Namechange546 · 13/05/2025 16:53

I'd say £10 and token gift (box of chocolate/bottle of wine).

It's probably about £15 to £20 in petrol.

All those saying give her something for her time do you realise it is actually illegal to make a profit by offering lifts? People do it all the time but you can get a fine, penalty points or vehicle seizure if caught and it would also invalidate your insurance.

Yes, but of course you wouldn’t actually tell anyone in those circumstances! Bit sketchy if it was just strangers but anyone would accept that someone giving their sister a lift somewhere is quite a normal activity.

DancingHippos · 13/05/2025 17:05

I think £10 -15 is fine.

TubeScreamer · 13/05/2025 17:06

£20

TimeForATerf · 13/05/2025 17:08

£20 and a bunch of tulips 🌷

Barrenfieldoffucks · 13/05/2025 17:08

I'd say 20 each. 15 at a push.

You might be getting the bus otherwise, but this will be far easier, nicer and more convenient for you but is a ball ache for her.

If you're not comfortable with a sensible level of reimbursement then tell them you'll get the bus separately.

Rosybud88 · 13/05/2025 17:10

£20

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 13/05/2025 17:11

£20.

HMRC approved rate is 45p per mile, which covers petrol and other wear and tear on the car etc. That's £36 for 80 miles, so half of that would be £18. I would round it up to £20.

I don't think you need to offer her anything for her time. She isn't a taxi driver and I assume that she has volunteered to drop you. A small token of appreciation might be nice but I doubt it would be expected.

OohOohOohOohOoooh · 13/05/2025 18:01

Thanks all. I was thinking of offering £20 and am happy that seems to be the consensus. Then I'm going to log it with 101 just to see what happens 😂

Just wanted to say I absolutely love your username.
