Why is there no Greggs store outside of the UK

I always wonder why Greggs doesn't have any shops overseas. I've definitely never seen them outside the UK. Coming from Japan, I really like their steak bake, and I'm absolutely sure they'd be super popular over there, even if they cost a bit more.

I have found that for all the snobbery British people show towards Greggs, there’s an equivalent in loads of countries. Mlinar in Croatia and Crobag in Austria spring to mind. So most countries are already well served for that sort of thing.

Bjorkdidit · 12/05/2025 13:25

It's risky entering new markets especially somewhere so far away and with such a different food culture.

I know that if I had endless choice of Japanese street food I'd never eat anything from Greggs.

FishDancer · 12/05/2025 13:25

Because other countries have their own equivalent cheap bakery chains?

I wish Leon would come back into Ireland. It did start here, but closed the couple of outlets it had after not very long.

I think Greggs has opened a couple of shops of NI?

TY78910 · 12/05/2025 13:31

I don’t think Greggs is a flavour that other countries would welcome tbh. They have their own bakeries. Kind of the same question in reverse - why wouldn’t a French chain bakery open up in the UK for instance?

mondaytosunday · 12/05/2025 13:41

I think they’d go Fuen a storm in the US and can’t really think of an equivalent. Bakeries there don’t tend to sell savoury and sweet unless it’s bread.
mamas fur those saying that other countries are already well served or have their own equivalent I’d dispute that. You may not have a Greggs when visiting Thailand but the Thais themselves may welcome it!
Then again curry and chips is a staple in tourist areas of Spain so a Greggs would fit in there….

There are loads of UK shops that dont exist outside the UK.

Whats special about Greggs. It just does coffee and baked goods. Its boring

Moier · 12/05/2025 13:45

Have you been to a Bakery in the Greek islands or Cyprus.
My gosh they are far superior.
I'd bring a whole suitcase of goodies back if l could.
😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋

Greenartywitch · 12/05/2025 13:47

Because their stuff is rubbish?

Sherararara · 12/05/2025 13:51

🤣🤣🤣

RobinEllacotStrike · 12/05/2025 13:56

Sausage rolls spontaneously combust when they hit the English Channel.

steak bakes can’t swim & can only travel by sausage rolls.

it’s an impossible dilemma

NoMoreCoffeePlease · 12/05/2025 13:58

Because frankly, it's rank. Especially compared to continental bakeries.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/05/2025 13:58

@Moier my mouth is now watering thinking of the chunky spinach and feta filo pastry slices !!

Kardamyli2 · 12/05/2025 13:59

Probably because the products wouldn't meet food standards in many countries.

turkeyboots · 12/05/2025 14:00

My DC love a trip to Greggs when in the UK. But it can't compare to a chicken filet roll or a spice bag, so I'm not sure they'd survive in Ireland.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/05/2025 14:01

I think the concept would go down ok in Germany Belgium France etc - but they would want an awful lot better quality - pies that actually had big chunks of meat etc - not just a load of slop in hot pastry - mind you when we lived in Copenhagen in all fairness the 7/11 stores sold a ton of totally rank shit too - usually in variations of hot dogs - not nice ones either - but cheap

This, absolutely!

I know which one I'd choose.

I don't really eat in Greggs (about once every 3 years for a sausage roll) but I can see it totally being a novelty store in Japan. The locals would be queuing to try it.

Also parts of America would love it.

minnienono · 12/05/2025 14:16

There’s chains local to all countries and suit the local market. There’s a chain in France I’ve bought from that’s really good, better cakes;’for sure but similar prices for baguette, coffee and a cake. Sausage rolls and steak bakes really are not popular outside of the uk!

SprinkleTheCat · 12/05/2025 14:16

Because it's awful.
Last 2 times I got greggs they were cold, tasteless pastries (I though the whole point is they were supposed to be hot), I ordered from a separate branch and it was hot but soggy and undercooked, also very greasy.
Not good enough to market outside the UK.

MissAmbrosia · 12/05/2025 14:18

There used to be at least 1 in Brussels but it shut years ago. I was more upset that the M&S food hall went the same way.

sad you've lost leon 😓

Snorlaxo · 12/05/2025 14:28

I’m wish we had 7-11 and Lawson like in Japan. I think that the food industry in Japan would be too competitive for Greggs - there’s lots of places offering cheap eating out experiences.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 12/05/2025 14:29

Greggs is rank. Greasy pastries, the sandwiches are full of shite quality mayo. Nothing but junk food. Can't even call it a bakery, yet its managed to force small, independent bakeries off the high street so many times. Awful place. Queues of fatties at every one.

Mareleine · 12/05/2025 14:30

But you can't move for western bakeries in Japan, China and South Korea these days! Why specifically Greggs?!
