Flight time query

Verbena17 · 11/05/2025 16:19

Quick query….
google says approx flight time between Greenland and Iceland is 3hrs.
And Iceland to Heathrow is 3 hours.

Yet flight tracker says they have 3 hrs to go before landing in Heathrow and they’re only just leaving Greenland (still not quite at the coast there).

How’s that work?

Greenland is big so maybe the airport(s) are a long way from the Icelandic airports?

Flights from Greenland to LHR are possibly taking a different route.

Verbena17 · 11/05/2025 16:27

Ah yes I guess maybe the airport in GL is on west.
My brain couldn’t work out why flight tracker says 1/2 the time of the physical flight time.
thanks.

Although……
’A flight from the east coast of Greenland to the west coast of Iceland typically takes around 3 hours. The distance between the two locations is roughly 1412 km (877 miles). ’

Maybe they’re basing that time on a much slower plane 😂

I don't quite know exactly what it is you're asking. What has Iceland got to do with anything?

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/05/2025 16:33

Flights between Iceland and Greenland are mostly on turboprop aircraft which are slower.

And Greenland is vast so it depends where in Greenland. It will take 3-4 hours to fly that length of the country

and flight times include faffing about time, taxying, lining up for runways, lining up for approach, sometimes circling etc. if you are literally flying past a place you miss out on all of that

if you are tracking a flight and someone is at the southern tip of Greenland then yes it’s probably 3-4 hours back to the uk from there

ScrewedByFunding · 11/05/2025 16:34

Are they flying to Iceland first? Then on to Heathrow? Otherwise what the fudge does Iceland have to do with your calculations?

Is this one of 'those' threads?

TizerorFizz · 11/05/2025 16:37

Time difference? We are on BST. What is Greenland time right now? Could be 1 hour or 2 hours behind - depends where they are.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 11/05/2025 16:43

Greenland is positively huge. It is the world's largest island.

Edited

As the crow flies, the narrowest distance between Greenland and Iceland is less than 300km or 180 miles.

I promise it’s not one of ‘those’ threads…..although not sure I know what that means 😂

My family are travelling back from Asia and the route they flew was over Alaska, Greenland and I’m assuming Iceland then home.
But yeah - it’s a BA Dreamliner so defo not a small plane.

Keep.it simple, ignore Iceland.

A 787 goes along at about 500 maybe 550.mph..actual figure varies (because..reasons) and speed across the ground is also effected by winds, but 550 mph will do for now.

Greenland (certainly southern tip,.and south east coast) is maybe 1500-1600 miles from London..so three hours remaining is credible and sensible.

Verbena17 · 12/05/2025 09:18

Thanks - I was just interested that’s all 😊

@Verbena17 Just look at scheduled arrival time! That’s all you need to know!

notimagain · 12/05/2025 22:08

Yeah but where's the fun in that..🤔

TBF if you don"t realise that different aircraft can have vastly different ground speeds, most especially jet vs turboprop (as @Clearinguptheclutter rightly pointed out) it can be confusing..

Looks like the Greenland - Iceland times are based on the likes of ATR42s or 72s.plodding along at not a lot of knots..character building stuff especially over the terrain in that part of the world..

TizerorFizz · 13/05/2025 08:41

If I’m on a plane or meeting someone at the airport - it matters not one jot what the plane is. Arrival time is all that matters.

True, I'm not arguing with that but I think the OP was curious as to how that arrival time had been calculated given the info presented by Google.

.I think this one goes into the category of "there's never a stupid question".

Verbena17 · 13/05/2025 14:32

I literally couldn’t work out how the arrival time was only 3 hours away (when I at posted) and yet the physical flight times on that route were double.

Once someone said it won’t be based on a 787 Dreamliner, but something like a turbo prop, then I realised ‘aha yes - that must be why’.

No conspiracy or voodoo- just a run of the mill query 😂.
And the flight was on time yay!
