Best supermarket cake for a party

I normally make my own but I'm feeling exhausted. I cannot afford a professional bakery cake. My niece, her husband and their families are coming to my place for the first time after their wedding. I wanted them to cut a cake!
Any ideas? TIA

We had a lovely one from m&S recently, I think it was lemon and blackcurrant? Quite expensive for a supermarket cake I thought, but the sharp flavours were nice - I find most bought cakes too sweet.

Agree M&S are fantastic, for a tighter budget, Sainsbury's are lovely

We’ve had that cake too and it was delicious

Morrison’s have a good chocolate one

Therealmetherealme · 11/05/2025 16:11

Had the Sainsbury’s cookies and cream recently, £16. Added some macarons to go on top. Easy and effective.

Colin the Caterpillar? M and S

UnPetitCochon · 11/05/2025 16:16

We had a chocolate tray bake type one from m&s last week, it was lovely.

The M&S cakes - they range between £20-30 and are really delicious and beautiful

Colin the Caterpillar? M and S

This was going to be my vote too

MayaPinion · 11/05/2025 16:27

Get a Colin the Caterpillar and a Connie the Caterpillar from M&S and add a tiny top hat and a veil from Amazon.

Sprig1 · 11/05/2025 16:31

Avoid Waitrose. I bought few from them and both were horrid.

Newgirls · 11/05/2025 16:34

M&S online have even more than the in shop options inc wedding cakes. I like the matching caterpillar cake idea tho - really sweet

PullTheBricksDown · 11/05/2025 16:44

M&S ones are very good and so are Asda ones in my experience.

Iamthemoom · 11/05/2025 16:48

The chocolate celebration cake from Cook is delicious.

TooManyNiblings · 11/05/2025 16:55

We've had several Asda ones, most recently yesterday! A print your own one.

feelingbleh · 11/05/2025 16:56

You can't beat a Colin

ruralwanderer · 11/05/2025 17:13

A friend served a Tesco chocolate traybake at her kid's last party and surprisingly it was superb.

If you have a Costco card they do big sheet cakes to order for about £18. You can pick the sponge, icing and writing. Or they have large cakes that are delicious- carrot, red velvet, Victoria sponge and chocolate.

Riverswimmers · 11/05/2025 17:41

Had the m&s red velvet recently - it had a lovely tangy cream cheese frosting. Was a bit less than £20. I was pleasantly surprised how nice it was and would buy again.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2025 18:42

A caterpillar cake is the only cake acceptable for celebrations.

MrsTWH · 11/05/2025 18:50

Slightly more than a supermarket cake (which often taste dry or have very artificial tasting frosting) but never had a bad one - Lola’s Cupcakes deliver bigger celebration cakes. Usually about £30 ish I think.

ImWearingPantaloons · 11/05/2025 19:06

M&S every time

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 11/05/2025 19:08

Purchased M&S vintage birthday cake this week for a family member, £18 and all of those at the party raved about the cake and asked where it was from. Really attractive cake and served 16 i think.

Cookerhood · 11/05/2025 19:08

The Cook cakes are excellent if you have one near you.

flowatal · 11/05/2025 19:44

When will you need it? For the larger M&S cakes, you need to order online and they still haven't opened that up again - I suspect it will take quite a while to sort out their IT issues. We had a nice rainbow cake last year from M&S but haven't been able to order - we've opted for Waitrose instead.
