Massive seizure

I had a massive seizure in sainsburys earlier in the week. First ever, cause unknown.
I am not allowed to drive - as it should be, I am a danger behind the wheel of this happened again.
does anyone have any experiences to share that are similar? I love rurally and really feeling panicked about how to cope without my car, how long I’ll be unable to drive and of course what’s caused the seizure in the first place.

Hi, I’m really sorry this happened to you. How scary. Did you go to hospital? What tests did they run? Are you going to see a neurologist?
in general you can drive after a year of being seizure free. You need to surrender your driving license and there’s a form which goes with it. Then after a year you can reapply and you have a medical review.

I think the driving ban is only six months if it’s just one seizure.
What type of seizure was it? I started having absence seizures which then progressed to full seizures where I would lose consciousness without warning and just crash to the floor.
The cause was a benign brain tumour which I had put two years ago and no future seizures since. I could drive a year after the surgery.
You should be referred to neurology and have an MRI.

I've just got my license back after 2 seizures.
I voluntarily surrendered - best way as it's not as difficult to get it back.
I had one as a child - epilepsy ruled out but after the last two they saw something worrying on my ECG.
To be able to drive again I had to agree to go on medication.
I live rurally too and my eldest had just started school. My husband had to take his lunch break at 8am every day so he could take her. Luckily I worked from home but it's very lonely when you can't just hop on a bus.
It's such a difficult situation and I'm sorry you are going through it. X x

I had my first seizure a couple of months ago and unfortunately in my area oxfordshire its a 9 month wait following a referral to the first fit clinic. I was told that i needed to be seen at the clinic before i drive again. I hope you dont have such a long wait

Had a blackout a few years ago that was assumed to be epilepsy related and I lost my driving licence after voluntarily telling the DVLA. After a lot of tests I was told they couldn’t find a reason and it wasn’t deemed epilepsy until a second event occurred so I was able to get my driving licence back after 11 months. I worried for a while about it happening again especially while driving but am nearly a decade on and it hasn’t so I rarely think about it now tbh.

Do you exercise or do a lot of breathwork?

HGC2 · 17/03/2026 10:30

I realise this is an old thread, but I had my first seizure on Sunday. I plan to call dvla and surrender my license today, and have been referred to fit first. Anything else I need to?

also how has having a seizure affected travel and car insurance?

early days and I worrying about all sorts

Do you drink alcohol heavily? Or had you had a night of drinking heavily recently?

BetterOffNow · 17/03/2026 10:44

How scary, my daughter had her first seizure in her late teens.
You should qualify for free bus travel and any local disability travel discounts (rail card, etc.), hope that helps.

You should see a neurologist, so they can investigate what may have caused it, discuss whether medication indicated and give you advice and information. Get your GP to refer you. If you have private medical insurance it is much quicker to see someone privately ( but make sure it is a neurologist who deals with epilepsy amongst their specialisms, as they are probably more up to date with latest treatment, if needed). If you were with anyone when you had your seizure, their eye-witness account of the seizure is very helpful to the neurologist.

(I am a medical secretary).
