No bearing. It's individual, like people.

HeyItsPickleRick · 11/05/2025 10:20

My anecdotal experience is male cats are friendlier

delightfuldweeb · 11/05/2025 10:23

I’ve only had boy cats. They’ve been a mixture of aloof and “want to live inside your skin”. So id say it’s the cat, not the sex of the cat!

No baring at all just depends on the cat some are very affectionate some aren't. The cat I have now wasn't very affectionate when younger but did as he got older he sits on our laps now he is now 16

Our DGirlCat1 was a proper lap cat and was so affectionate but DGirlcat2 has never sat on my lap and she is occasionally loving but then she had a horrific start. DBoycat1 never sat on my lap and would occasionally be affectionate whilst DBoycat2 is very loving and sweet. So it depends on their personalities.

Yes mine too, but doubtful its scientific evidence!

Current (neutered male) cat is extremely affectionate as was previous cat, an enormous ex-Tomcat I had some years ago. The next door neighbours kids used to dress him up in bonnets and wheel him round in a toy buggy he was so laid back.

But then the female tortie we had when I was a teenager was a love bug who slept under the blankets tucked into the crook of my knees.

RareGoalsVerge · 11/05/2025 10:31

Our female cat is very affectionate towards DH and standoffish and occasionally violent with everyone else. Despite us all taking fairly equal turns with feeding.

My theory is that she's trying to displace me as alpha female in the household.

Plump82 · 11/05/2025 10:32

I've currently got a boy and girl from the same litter and previously had a girl. My old girl wasn't very affectionate at all, but I don't think she had a very good start to life before I rehomed her. She did love my husband and dad though so maybe she wasn't a fan of female?

My current cats are both unbelievably affectionate. However boy cat is anyone's , he's really confident and loves meeting new people and girl cat is shy and quite timid with people who aren't me or my husband. Both adore us though!

bombastix · 11/05/2025 10:34

The friendliest cats I’ve ever had are male. Mushy cats, wanting to sit on you all the time.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 11/05/2025 10:34

Neutered male cats tend to be rather more soppy and affectionate than females in my experience, although if a female decides to bond with you, that's that. You have a velcro kitty.

Cupboard love does however, play a large part in this decision.

FetidMoppet · 11/05/2025 10:37

No bearing in my experience.
We currently have 1 boy cat who INSISTS on sitting on a lap - any lap will do. 1 girl cat who will sit on me, DH or DD but no one else. And 1 boy cat who is velcro'ed to DH and runs away from anyone else.

Ahsheeit · 11/05/2025 10:55

Anecdotally, also neutered toms. The girl cats I've had in the past have been aloof and one a little bit bitey. My boy cats have been soppy little buggers. This is my current idiot of a cat, whom I adore.

for us its been the female the male likes his own space and to hunt outside

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/05/2025 11:00

We’ve had both. Our girl was an absolute cuddle monster, loved a lap, particularly in winter. When she was pts last year we adopted a little boy who had been a stray kitten, and it took him a while to warm up. He’s not much for laps but he loves a cuddle in bed, and also likes being picked up to snuggle into your neck. Here he is lying with me as I drink tea and scroll right now!

Purely anecdotally, my male cats have always been more affectionate to me, and the females have been 'daddy's girls' 😅

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/05/2025 11:02

No bearing ime. I have had many of both sexes. Some are real cuddle monsters others less so.

DefinitelyMaybe92 · 11/05/2025 11:03

IMPE I’ve found that male cats are more “stereotypically” friendly, ie they want to be cuddled more and are more easy-going about human-initiated contact. However, girl cats can be very clingy and protective - they will follow you around everywhere you go and be your little guardian, but they don’t necessarily like being picked up. They’ll come to you when they want a cuddle, which is often if you leave them to their own devices.

Fruhstuck · 11/05/2025 11:05

Of all the cats I’ve ever had, the two most affectionate were females. The third was a male. I’ve had both males and females not particularly affectionate. My current cat, female, is so affectionate it sometimes verges on over-needy.

I think a lot depends on their early socialising-with-humans experiences.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 11/05/2025 11:06

mine isn't cuddly at all, she's a girl - makes me a little sad 😂

Todaytodaytodaytoday · 11/05/2025 11:13

We’ve had three cats over our life (not at the same time). Two were boys - soppy and friendly (one is still with us). The other a female tabby who was an absolute bitch. We had to send her back to the cat sanctuary because my daughter was so stressed around her she wet herself! The female cat was adopted so possibly had bad experiences with children. She has since been rehomed with an elderly lady. That said, the male cats were adopted too and one was even from a feral litter but still very friendly. Just our experience though. I suspect it has more to do with early socialising as someone else said.

CherryRipe1 · 11/05/2025 11:16

Boy cats definitely but mum's was the most timid avoidant cat I've ever come across. Our female cats have been very aloof.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/05/2025 11:22

All of my cats, 10 of them over the years, both sexes, have been ridiculously soppy. Especially the ferals I have tamed. They were all velcro cats.

AgnesX · 11/05/2025 11:27

My female cat was the most cuddly wee girl, she loved attention so much it was to the detriment of her brother (who really came into his own after she died).

Just btw Siamese are a wonderful affectionate breed and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Vinorosso74 · 11/05/2025 11:28

I've had 4 cats in my lifetime, 2 male, 2 female. The females were the lapcats, the males affectionate but no soppy sitting on laps for them!
I volunteer for Cats Protection and have met so many cats over the years and can honestly say there is no difference between males and females and affectionateness.

Pricelessadvice · 11/05/2025 11:30

I find that female cats choose their ‘person’ and then idolise that person. They tend to be overly affectionate with that person, often more so than a male cat might be. However, they might be shy or aloof with others who aren’t their special person.

Male cats I find to be more affectionate in general with all family members.

40 years of cats and many of them! Currently have 3- 2 females and a male.
