Bitcoin - is it still worth investing?

Remmy123 · 11/05/2025 07:37

I was with some friends last week who have heavily invested in bitcoin and still are and hope to retire early. Some have sold investment properties as there is no return on BTL any more and put it all into bitcoin.

do you think it's a safe investment as I am thinking 'sod it I'll put a few thousand in' what's the worse that could happen!

has anyone you know done well out of it?

thanks

Yes I know several people who have but you can only think longterm with it not short term.

I tried it but gave up as could not justify paying in regularly. It kept doing down and we are in a bull market so started feeling dubious. It is subject to massive fluctuations so you need nerves of steel to cope.

More for the well off which I am not.

If you can keep your money in for 4 years minimum they say you won't lose. I was constantly checking the price and feeling stressed.

Trading is too volatile and most lose but investing may be worthwhile if you have the stomach to hold. Dollar cost average ie invest the same amount monthly or regularly can buffer the storms.

I think it is past the really good days of it when you could make really big gains. In addition Michael Saylor of Microsoft keeps buying up more and more and banks internationally are buying into it way more yet no increases in price during this time. It strikes me it is a better price for the big investors and something fishy is now going on. This all took place in the past few months and despite this the price kept dropping. Very unnerving!

There is a great deal of hype on you tube mainly from those heavily bought into it so they of course have a vested interest in it.

I personally would do stocks and shares isa instead if I was more comfortably off.

If you have the stomach for it give it a whirl. Remember it is a 4 year hold so do not go in and out like a yo yo. Bitcoin was very interesting to learn about but personally I think it seems to cater for the bigger players.

You can study this more on reddit. Have a read on there and research further responses on here and take it from there.

Bitcoin is lots of things, but anyone who thinks it’s “safe” should not be allowed anywhere near the investment market.

nyancatdays · 11/05/2025 11:57

I wouldn’t unless you have a time machine and can go back to 2009. It’s currently being heavily promoted by Elon and all the techbros (eg all over Xwitter) and is currently attracting the kind of investor who thought NFTs were a real whiz. It has all sorts of issues with rampant speculation, environmental costs and so on. Most crypto is little more than a pyramid scheme at the moment.

Bitcoin is not crypto. Totally different. Bitcoiners also state it is a complete myth that a) it is bad for the environment and b) it is a pyramid scheme which it is not.

Many people confuse bitcoin with crypto.

Nonsense - Bitcoin is a (the original) blockchain cryptocurrency, and it’s termed (and taxed) as such by banks and governments, so I’ve no idea what you’re talking about here. Are you some kind of scammer?

Augustus40 · 11/05/2025 12:08

In case of fraud or hard sell I imagine. There are still a great deal of hang ups and prejudices about bitcoin in the UK. This country is quite behind about it.

Good grief.

I am only going by what I have heard on you tube or read on reddit.

I see. @Remmy123 OP: one good rule for you, is not to take investment advice from people whose sources are YouTube and Reddit.

mynameiscalypso · 11/05/2025 12:15

Bitcoin is most definitely a cryptocurrency. There’s nothing inherently wrong in investing in legitimate crypto assets (ie not stupid meme tokens) but it’s a high risk and volatile investment. Which might suit your investment portfolio and risk appetite or it might not. It doesn’t suit mine so I don’t invest in crypto.

I wouldn't just chuck a few thousand in, hoping for the best, if you don't know what you're doing? You need to understand the markets, trading, try and make predictions of what will happen and keep a regular eye on it.
My husband invested thousands but he knows what he is doing, he checks it daily, nightly, has alarms set for certain things and knows when to make trades.
I'm paraphrasing on what he does, because I don't understand it well enough but he makes us money and I leave him to it 🤣 it's a risky game.

Remmy123 · 11/05/2025 12:42

Thanks all it's an interesting conversation - I know nothing about investments but the people I know go to bitcoin meetings - seemed a bit cult like! I may have a dabble but wouldn't invest much (I don't have much)

If you don't have much then you can't afford to lose it by investing it in something that isn't rock solid. Put it in a savings account.

Tomatotomatoo · 07/08/2025 22:35

Yes I think it has a great deal further to go.

It's a capped market, 21 million coins max.
My personal view is over the next 4 years 250k per coin is not a crazy assumption
