Any bird experts on here?

I spend a lot of time at home during the day and have become fascinated by the birds. We have blackbirds and have seen a Robin and sparrows. There are starlings nesting in a nearby roof. I’m always concerned for them because there are so many cats here but today I heard a lot of commotion outside. It was magpies basically chasing one of the cats. The cat was hiding under a car! Later I saw them again, having a go at another cat. The noise!

Guessing there must be a nest near but they are very determined to get at the cats.

Anyone seen this before?

Yes, a lot of birds, even Sparrows will form a group and dive bomb predators.

I've seen sheep beat 7 colours out of a dog too

They are really going for it lately!

Magpies are vicious, especially if they have young. I've seen them chase dogs and people too.

My cats run away from magpies. I love watching the birds, we have all sorts in our garden, with a bird table, bird bath and various feeders hanging up. The cats watch them, but don’t chase, the generally ignore each other. Except the Magpies, they seem scared of them. Their cackling scares me too sometimes. The little robins gang up and scare off the magpies! Don’t underestimate the pretty little robins. I love the blackbirds, they are so tame and will come right up to me in the garden, they love apples, so I put apple cores out for them.

These cackling magpies have been at it all day. They seem determined to chase all the cats out of the neighbourhood.

Magpies killed a nest of baby wood pigeons in our oak tree at the front and a nest of baby collared doves in our Hawthorn tree.

Magpies are also nest robbers - they’ll chase off the parents and steal the chicks to feed their own. I know it’s nature, but not an endearing habit.

I was a top floor of a multistory car park last week and a crow was seeing off a red kite, they were just above us, it was amazing sight. I think the crow must have had a nest in the tree.

Lots of birds will dive bomb any perceived predators.....birds of prey or magpies. Geese and swans are extremely protective of their nests and babies

I've seen both Crows and even Hawks being chased away by much smaller birds flying above them and dive bombing.
Always at this time of year when they are having they're young.
Many years ago I lived on a farm where there was a long row of rhubarb growing in full leaf.
We had young cats who roamed around the gardens and one day a Hawk was circling and the three cats dove under the large rhubarb leaves to hide.
My mum and I rescued them one by one.
Also years ago, out for a walk in a nature reserve we were on another path near the water when we saw a young couple being pursued by an aggressive male goose.
It flapped its massive wings just a matter of inches from the backs of their heads, as the terrified young couple raced away and dove for cover under a bush.

My friends tom cat has been picked on by the local magpies for a couple of years now. But he got his revenge. He ate their baby.

That’s horrible. Poor birds inky trying to protect their young.

There are too many cats prowling around our way destroying nests and attacking birds

You're not wrong. One of the reasons I dont like cats.

I would not concern yourself about magpies they are shady bastards and can definitely look after themselves.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 12/05/2025 15:09

Good thing they aren’t what we used to call magpies in Australia-currawongs. More crow size and shaped and will dive bomb anyone near their nests. Lots of videos about them. But unlike our maggies, they have a beautiful song.
