Anyone from or know Hackney?

This is highly unlikely but living in the hopes. I'm taking the DC to Hackney Empire tomorrow. We don't live in London and have never taken DS before. Both DC have special needs.

We booked a car parking space for us via Just Park but it's just been cancelled. That was the second one we booked, the first one being cancelled a month ago.

We have to drive up to manage needs and can't do public transport. All of the nearby car spaces are now booked and the walk from the closest one (which isn't that close) will be stressful with their needs.

I've found there's a car park on Amhurst Road which is really small but perfect positioning. Google says it's closed atm but can't find anything else about it being closed. Does anyone know if it's open or not and if it's likely to have space around 8am on a Sunday morning?

Any ideas or suggestions on parking sp gratefully received. I'm getting entirely overwhelmed and stressed about this now.

The Wiggles? We are going too and just seen the Mildmay line is a bus replacement so has scuppered our plans of a quick easy get away, so our journey is looking like a 2 hour trip instead. I feel your stress, sorry I can’t help with an answer but wanted to show solidarity!

DS once used a meetup app where the meetup location was set to hackney. Whilst he had a good dinner, he ubered 15 mins to the station and didn't dare walk. He was scared he'd get mugged.

I don't know the area at all and I have to admit I'm a bit worried about where we will park and whether it'll be a safe area to walk (I hope I don't sound ridiculous!).

I used to live around there, not sure about whether the car park is temp closed or not, but a lot of the side streets around there are ok to park on on a Sunday.

Wowzel · 10/05/2025 13:44

And to add, it won't feel dangerous or dodgy on a Sunday morning!

Whyherewego · 10/05/2025 13:45

Most Hackney residential streets will be OK for on street parking on a Sunday. Just look at this map and it will tell you what the controlled hours are https://hackney.gov.uk/parking-zones

really? I looked on the Jackney Council site and it implied they were permit only apart form very few pay and display (not really close enough)

thank you for the zones info - I'm going to look into this. If we can park on a street nearby then I'm very happy :)

They are all resident permit parking but the controlled hours are what matters. Most are OK on a Sunday

As far as I know the Amhurst Road car park is open. If you look on a map it’s actually on Aspland Grove. There is parking behind the Empire, I’m guessing you know/have tried that?
Can you manage a short bus trip or is it not do-able?

LightCameraBitchSmile · 10/05/2025 14:48

There is nothing scary about the area around Hackney empire - it’s a main road! Plenty of us live there and manage to walk 15 mins to a station (though few places in Hackney are that far from either station, especially where you’d have a meet up…)

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 10/05/2025 15:14

If you have a blue badge, you can typically park on residential side streets x

Reastie · 10/05/2025 15:28

Thanks for the help. I've just been on a googling frenzy and hopefully we'll be fine with the permit restrictions off on a Sunday.

Bus sadly is out of the question, and I'm in the process of applying for a blue badge so we don't have one of those.

I really didn't mean to sound derogatory about Hackney and potential rough bits. I know absolutely nothing about the area and never go to London! When I looked up paying for parking on someone's drive, I had no idea what the mile or so's walk would be like to the theatre.

Hi OP. I have been to a Bootsale in Hackney on a Sunday morning and parked in a side street. I’d get there a bit earlier just to make sure re permit parking as I’m not sure all the streets are free on Sundays.

Sunday morning will be fine walking around. Lots of people having coffee and pastries!

Im afraid to say (I’m an East Londoner born and bred) that I am very careful walking around Hackney at times. Be wary who is around if you need to get your phone out too.

enjoy the day OP!

Thank you so much. I'll likely have to have my phone constantly out to follow the map for how to find the theatre, but crossing fingers we find somewhere to park close by easily enough and the children have a great time!

not sure if that link works OP as I’ve never done it before!

Whistledown2 · 10/05/2025 18:46

This may work. Looks like apart from event days it’s Monday to Saturday mostly.

If you zoom in on the map
it gives names of roads.

Hope you and your children have a lovely time, it's a lovely venue.

Reastie · 12/05/2025 21:21

Just wanted to update that we had an amazing time and parked literally two mins walk away from the theatre with the permit parking being off in a Sunday. It was just the most convenient spot and so close. Thank you so much for the advice - turns out we saved £15 from the just park that was cancelled and parked closer in any case than the space we booked!
