Private members clubs London

Talk to me about private members clubs in London....

Do you or your spouse use one? I'd like to get my husband membership as he commutes three times a week and he'd be better off doing it twice and stopping over. I want it to enhance his wellbeing, not deplete it.

Im looking for something reasonably priced preferably with a gym but thats not essential. Somewhere he can take clients, sleep comfortably and get a meal.

Please give me advice....this is not my world at all!

TIA

Some of the bars/functions might be like that but not all across the branches, and OP wants accommodation not networking opportunities. I know what you mean, but it's possible to use these places and avoid that side. Or enjoy it, who knows, it could be their cuppa!

Yes, fair maybe the DH is a stacked and Botox’d Instagram addict, in which case, crack on 😂 I have to say though, during my membership I went to several branches in London as well as ones in the US and a few European cities and the membership across the board was almost universally as described. It used to be big on members having music industry/major label connections which is an incredibly gross, sycophantic industry (used to work in it) but I think they let pretty much anyone in now.

The Lansdowne could work, although he would need a couple of sponsors I think.

DH belongs - good gym, amazing pool, barber on site. Good location on Berkeley Sq. Well run. The rooms are well equipped. Not very lively but reliable. At busy times, you might get a reciprocal booking elsewhere.

We use a club when in London. It’s light years removed from a commercial hotel, you get to know the staff, it’s a familiar and easy place to stay. If you’re medical, the Royal Colleges have some accommodation for members as well.

A relative is a member at The In and Out, it’s very comfortable and has a pool and gym.

MrsKateColumbo · 09/05/2025 13:55

The George and RAC are both nice, i have arranged events there but never stayed!

Home House is less prestigious but easier to get membership in

ERthree · 09/05/2025 14:14

What a lovely thing to do for the person you love. As for the outraged, ignore them.

freezingmytoesoff · 09/05/2025 14:22

Another vote for Home House

Again really helpful advice from many of you. I really appreciate it, particularly the alternative perspectives on pied-a-terre etc.

If you can afford it, can make use of it and can get membership try it. Groucho club is supposed to opening a place in Yorkshire. I'd love to be in one of these clubs but not one of the exclusive ones that bar anyone who isn't male, white, Oxbridge, Eton, Guards

Union's not the kind of club where you stay over afaik, it's a bar/restaurant where you can hang out and work away from the hoi polloi, same as Bafta, Groucho, Century Club etc. The older more exclusive places tend to be the ones with rooms so you can stay over in town, although it's not always easy to join.

Soho House has accommodation and lots of branches internationally as well as a few across London. That might be worth considering as it's more modern and hotel-like. https://www.sohohouse.com/en-us/bedrooms

There's also the civil service club, which isn't delightful but is affordable and has rooms, though of course he'd have to have worked for the cs at some point - www.civilserviceclub.org.uk/accommodation/

Thank you for this, we had no idea about the Civil Service club. My DH is ex CS so has just joined.

I was staggered how many there are and how many bedrooms some have. The cost of membership and the prime locations. The fact they can exist in 2025 shows how much money there is in these areas of society albeit a tiny percentage of the population.

Davros · 09/05/2025 23:09

I seem to remember a public schools club. DH and his mates used to play snooker there. Sorry, no further info

AzurePanda · 09/05/2025 23:51

@Pedallleur Many clubs bought freehold properties hundreds of years ago for very small sums of money.

FiendsandFairies · 10/05/2025 00:09

My parents were members of The Sloane Club and loved it (sadly passed away now), but I think the members were mostly retired from what they said. I would avoid the Soho House chain - my sister is a member and I’ve been to a few with her. The decor is gorgeous but it does seem to be wall to wall shallow people who I would not want to be friends with. The influencer/comedian Henry Rowley does very funny sketches about it on Instagram/TikTok.

Of course they did. They had the money and the ability to buy these areas. Like the Grosvenors or the Crowm

I’m just looking at Fabric magazine, which comes through the door free, and there is a big article about private members clubs. I’ve put a photo of the intro here. The three clubs they cover in the article are

  • Maslow’s
  • - The Other House
  • - the Sloane club
I can photograph the whole article if you want or dm me and I can post it to you

@Felloffthehedonictreadmill hi OP! I’m in exactly the same position as four DH and I’m looking for similar, affordable private members clubs in london for when I travel for work. Where did you go for in the end?

mamansloth · 12/09/2025 15:37

You will struggle to do it as a surprise gift, we are members of a few clubs in London and all require nominations and seconders, plus application forms and signatures etc. Wait lidt times can vary but upwards of a year for some isn’t unusual.

I’d check dress codes - some, like the RAC are very strict (no denim, no trainers), which if you work in an industry with clients who are more casual can be very awkward when your associate is turned away at the door (had it happen). I barely take people to the RAC any more unless I know they know the dress code as it can be quite embarrassing. But SoHo house - you stand out if you aren’t more on the fashionably casual side.
There’s a whole range of options though. You’ll find something.

We make good use of reciprocal club arrangements across the world too which means often not having to find hotel rooms in locations you aren’t familiar with. If that’s a benefit. My husband travels extensively so it’s a very handy benefit for us.
