What is the point of posting this?! The OP has no way of knowing whether someone has read their post unless they comment!

OP posts:

It helps to keep the post active - so that someone else who can help might step in.

Also, it’s a bit depressing to get no responses - I guess it can help to know someone’s read your post even if they can’t personally help.

Agree it’s an irritating expression though!

It is just people's way of acknowledging the OP but they may not have any direct experience so cannot offer advice. This comment is usually left when the OP is struggling and or going through a difficult situation.

But if a person posts and then sees they have a reply some posters may be upset that the reply is not a real reply, no I do not do this myself but I dont see the point of 'I am just posting for no reason' either

But it also bumps it for other people to respond to.

It's a well intentioned gesture.

FloraBotticelli · 09/05/2025 07:16

It just lets people know they’ve been seen rather than talking into the void. It’s meant kindly.

myplace · 09/05/2025 07:19

It’s like offering a handhold. It’s company. It’s recognition that the OP is there and asking for help, even if the person reading can’t help.

Otherwise it’s like the virtual equivalent of ignoring someone. Refusing to smile back. Looking away instead of answering a greeting.

Agree with it being a kind aid to validate and help keep a thread bumped. I've posted threads on difficult topics and it sometimes can be a while before anyone responds - the worry is it will fall off active. I've found it validating and thoughtful when people have done it for me.
