Anyone been sterilised during c section?

I had my consultant appointment today and asked to have my tubes tied during c section, which he agreed to. I’m just looking for any experiences from others regarding recovery or general experiences? It was actually something I decided last night so haven’t had time to research personal experiences, just the medical stuff.

FWIW, I have had a contraceptive failure lead to pregnancy, I’m mid 20’s, this is my third child and I don’t want to be worried about falling pregnant for the next 10+ years. Also, my body rejected the coil.

Me ! I got sterilised when I had my second wee boy. I had a section with both kids and didn’t find it made much difference to recovery. It is a bit uncomfortable the tugging and whatever they do when sterilising but that was it. Due to the additional work of sterilising I had more trapped air second time round which gave me weird shoulder pain in the hospital but after I got home recovery was only harder as I was juggling a not even 2 year old and a newborn and DH had to return to work 3 days after second one was born (self employed no pat leave)

Yes I had my tubes tied during my last c-section which was planned. Operation itself was much the same, assume a bit longer than a normal planned one. Recovery felt a bit harder than my first emergency c section but I think that was because I had quite a lot of bruising from where they had to rummage around a bit more!

Yes, me. I had it done during my 4th c section. I didn't notice anything different to my other sections during the recovery, although my recoveries took longer and longer with each additional c section, I think due to scar tissue. My periods are very painful and extremely heavy for 1 or 2 days but it's worth it knowing I won't get pregnant.

@Surroundedbyfools@Travellingraspberrythank you both, can I ask if either of you have any regrets? I don’t think that I will as I 1000% don’t want anymore but it’s such definite decision. Think hormones are making it hard to stay impartial!

I think for me, knowing the option to have more has been taken away, it's stopped any broodiness and I've fully accepted I wont be having more. I still love babies but I've closed that chapter of my life, done and dusted.

Kinsters · 08/05/2025 16:59

Not the point of the thread but you should consider asking the surgeon to remove your tubes rather than just tie them. It's more effective and also thought to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.

MumandnotMum · 08/05/2025 17:10

I second asking to have tubes removed. I had a ligation and fell pregnant 19 months later!

GivingUpFinally · 08/05/2025 17:34

They refused to do mine at the same time. Said it wasn't nearly as successful as everything is swollen and not where it should be. Advised to wait a year post partum

I think mid 20s is too young to make such a permanent decision as you don’t know how you will feel about having another when you are in your 30s.

It depends on individual circumstance. I was 29. I had 4 children already by all by c section. It's not recommended to keep on having c sections due to the risk of rupture and I already had quite extensive scar tissue. A vaginal birth is not usually recommended once you have had 2 c sections either.

They now don’t tie them but cut/ remove them. As the swelling was making the clips pop off and it wasn’t working for everyone. The operation is a bit longer but by speaking to people about this it can affect your periods and even menopause. Is a vasectomy an option for your partner? It seems very quick and easy for them in comparison with no side effects.

Absolutely zero regrets !! I had an implant for years before my first baby and it worked a dream never any bother. After baby 1 I got another and it was a nightmare. Bled constantly and it was Covid times so I couldn’t get an appointment to get it out. Eventually went private and got it removed and ended up pregnant again. I’ve never found a pill that agreed with me. 2 children is plenty for me. Some days are a struggle and I think thank fuck I got sterilised lol
just to add my periods are a bit lighter since I got sterilised so no ill effects there

merrymelody · 08/05/2025 19:30

I asked my ob/gyn to tie my tubes during my 2nd CS but he wanted to wait until my DS was thriving. Poor child didn’t do so well on his Apgar. (He’s fine now, 21 years later.)

Phillipa12 · 08/05/2025 19:44

I had my tubes tied during my 4th section. My surgeon recommended I had a large section of my tubes removed instead as this was more likely to be successful, he also mentioned the reduced risk of ovarian cancer , my recovery was slightly more painful, but not much and I was up and running in the usual time. Best decision I have made,

SparkyBlue · 08/05/2025 20:28

I had mine done during my third c section which was a surprise pregnancy. I had absolutely no issues with recovery or anything afterwards but I've always had good recoveries anyway compared to some peoples experiences. Mine were removed and not tied as that's what's done now at the hospital where I had it done

lilydragon · 08/05/2025 21:40

I had mine tied during my second section. I didn’t notice any difference in the recovery compared to my first section, both times my recovery was very easy compared with some people’s experiences.

angelinamerry · 09/05/2025 07:23

@babystarsandmoonI appreciate what you’re saying, but I have (or nearly have) 3 and I have fallen pregnant on contraception. I couldn’t ever have an abortion and three is the most that I could handle.

Will DH have to leave the room whilst they do that bit?

No he will still in. They got baby out and sorted then gave him to me to hold while they cracked on with the sterilising. It was a bit uncomfortable and as you know it’s hard to hold baby basically lying at ur neck so I asked DH to hold him while they did that bit ! X
