Has anyone made their own flavoured water?

One of my children will not drink plain water, if that’s all I put in her school bottle it comes home untouched.

On balance I’d rather know she was drinking something so it’s not the hill I’ve chosen to die on.

I’ve been buying flavoured water which she’ll finish, but the plastic really bothers me. Has anyone used and drops or similar to make flavoured water without all the packaging.

(The bottles with the fresh fruit container things won’t work. I don’t think it would taste strong enough and I don’t want to be constantly checking I’ve got the right fresh fruit each day).

Do you know what 'duty of care' means? It doesn't mean an obligation to coax each child to learn to drink water or a drink that isn't squash. That is very, very much the parent's responsibility (if they don't want their kid to drink squash). Why are you telling the OP that's for teachers/ TAs to waste time on when they should be teaching? It absolutely isn't under the school's duty of care. If the child doesn't want to drink, what do you expect the staff to do and why? The OP is quite right.

nowhere have I said that teachers or TA’s should be teaching them this. But drinking throughout the day to stay hydrated is encouraged in all of the schools I’ve been in.. if your school doesn’t remind your kids to drink water then it’s a pretty rubbish school tbh. It’s quite a simple and important thing.

You've said 'it's the school's problem'. It isn't.

I actually think you should just stop, it might take awhile but she will realise that's all she's going to get. She only wants flavoured water because she was introduced to it, and obviously it tastes better to her

For all those arguing that she should be forced to drink plain water and will if there is no option - I am 67 years old, I hate plain water, have never drunk it and nothing on God's earth that will make me. There are better hills to die on when there are other options.

And I have all my teeth, thanks.

My autistic daughter would end up in hospital on an IV if I only offered her water. Well done to all the perfect parents who would prefer to die on the “water only” hill.

Squash or fruit aren’t poison ffs.

Op, I put squash in my daughter’s school bottle and they turn a blind eye that it’s not plain water. Or, I second the AirUp - you can mix up the flavors and it does work.

Peak Mumsnet here. OP asks for tips on making flavoured water. Explains the reasons why she won’t force the ‘plain water’ and also additionally that she’s been trying for 2 years. Then posters come along telling her she’s wrong, she mustn’t give her child the lethal squash/fruit water and “it’s not the same as ARFID” etc etc. Just answer the bloody question!!

I use lemon slices in mine. I squeeze them as I’m putting them in my water bottle so the flavour is there straightaway. Not sure whether lemon would be the right taste for a child though. Mint is nice too.

It is while the child is at school they can’t let children just dehydrate 😂 they should be working with the parents to encourage and support them. The fact you think schools should just ignore a child’s water intake for 6 hours a day is insane 🫶

I have different varieties of mint which I put in my own water bottle. Current favourite is strawberry mint. It smells very strongly of strawberries and is a really nice addition to water, probably working more like an air up than an actual flavour.

Lemon will wreck your teeth over time (sadly speaking from experience). Mint is delicious
