How to organise food shop better?

What's everyone food shop method?

We do orders from ASDA. We have a delivery pass and we can drive but we have a 3 and 1yo, so getting our food shop to us is a lot more helpful.

We feel like though we spend a lot on the delivery food shop (100-140) then have to do a top up later in the week

Is this just the cost and does everyone do top ups??? I feel we could re arrange our shopping better to lessen top ups and make it cheaper

NB: yes I do like M&S as per my username lol! But only really get treats from there or special occasions food

Do a weekly menu so you know exactly what you need to buy. Freeze stuff on the day shopping arrives and just take out as needed, add in a couple of treats and you shouldn’t really need to top up much at all, unless you are about to reveal you have a tiny fridge with freezer compartment up top and no separate freezer.
Batch cook stuff like Bol, curry, casserole etc so there is always an emergency meal in the freezer to avoid the need to go out and get something for dinner or a takeaway when knackered/busy.

If you have a delivery pass why not have a delivery ever 4 days or so. I did this when working a very full on career and so didn’t run out of milk, fresh fruit and salad etc. I also didn’t have to think too far ahead.

I'm about to try this.... we're always out of milk but then if order more in 1 go it goes out of date... why I believed I can only have one delivery a week is beyond me!

But yes OP food shopping is expensive. But I have 2 teens!

How much you spend is done to your food choices and what you include in your shop. We currently spend around £60 a week in total but only 2 adults, I’m a decent cook though so no waste. That amount includes at least 7 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 6 dinners, household cleaning and my shampoo etc (his shampoo, fussy, and soap , also fussy is mail ordered)

Being a good cook really makes a difference, something I’m working on too.

I agree with minnienono. It depends on you and where your priorities are. We cook, mostly from scratch, and tend to buy supermarket brands. We did shop at Tesco with delivery saver and their own stuff is so so . But the range was never great and we often had to do a lot of top-ups during the month. Now we do a Waitrose weekly and monthly meat shop at Costco and the quality is much better imho. Price is about the same. We do rely on own brand items and the quality of these important.

The key for us is monthly meal planning. Without it we spend a fortune! But having a list is essential. It also depends on the occasion. If I’m doing a party or similar I’ll go to Aldi and create a great graze table.

We feed a family of 8 (2 adults and 6 8yo and under) and if you had told me a Waitrose shop would work for us and our budget I’d have called you a posh liar - but there it is. We spend about £120 a week (£25 of that is the monthly meat at Costco)
