Feeling so so ill and overwhelmed

Don’t know where this came from - aches and pains all over and on all my joints especially back, knees and ankles. Was awake all nite shivering. Took some paracetamol this morn and had a little nap but woke up to the bed soaking. Can’t strip it . DS is 16 and I couldn’t drive him to school this morn. I offered him an uber - he has hurt his knee so can’t walk there. I wish my daughter was here. I feel so overwhelmed and alone. If I ask him for a glass of water he does it but otherwise he just leaves me alone. Have 2 commitments later today that I cancelled last week. It’s going to look so bad to cancel again. Anyone had this. Don’t have a cold or sore throat: just a headache

I think ds is annoyed at missing school. I said I’d pay for an Uber tho I can’t help it. Am so shaky I can’t go down the stairs atm

Sorry you feel so unwell. Why didn't your son take the Uber?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 07/05/2025 11:36

You've got flu. It does feel terrible.
I'm really sorry you're so unwell and I think you need to text your son with specific instructions e.g. please bring me a cup of tea with sugar (or whatever).

Teenage boys are not known for their skills as nurses.

Yeah I had this back in Feb. It was very unpleasant.

you have my sympathies. I hope it passes soon.

It does sound like flu.

Cancel your plans - let them know it’s flu and they will understand.

Expect to spend 2-5 days in bed or on the sofa. Explain this to your son and get him to help plan out how it will work - how he’ll get to school (can he get a lift with a friend), what food is easy for him to prepare (for both of you), is a food shop needed (in which case can it be delivered, when will he be in to receive it, and include easy ready meals in it), would he prefer to bring you a jug/water bottle of fluids etc. he is absolutely old enough to step up here!

You have flu.
Your son needs to understand. Is he GCSE year or lower 6th? If lower 6th, ask him to go to the pharmacy for lemsip and the food shop for ready meals for him and soup for you.Tell him you need him to help strip the bed.

if he's mid GCSEs I'd go on neighbourhood whatsapp and ask for help shopping and changing your bed. You will feel so much better with clean sheets.

If that's not possible, do an online same dsy order, flip the duvet to air the soaked side and air the sheets while you have a bath. And explain he needs to get an Uber tomorrow.

Really hope you feel better soon.

Never mind him, teenage boys are generally not famed for their bed side manner. If you need something - tell him. He can get an uber to the pharmacy, make soup, order a Tesco shop for delivery etc.

Can you call your DD?

Sympathies to you. Flu (real flu not the 'I have a touch of flu' brigade) is a bastard. It comes for you all guns blazing out of nowhere and attacks every nerve ending. If someone was to come in and say 'there's £1000 in your garden about to blow away you'd probably say 'sod it. Let it go'. It rampages all over your body then goes away as quickly as it came. Look forward to that time but give yourself time to recover.
