How about some LED lights? That go around his gaming area.

How about some artwork of his favourite games for the walls. You can get them made up at a print shop, just download the image you/he likes and pop it on a USB stick to take in. I have some lovely canvas prints of the main characters from my favourite games.

I was going to suggest a bin and a mini fridge but I see no food allowed. A little table beside his gaming chair for a water bottle and to put his controller on?

Mins has a bean bag and a gaming chair, also a dedicated spot for charging batteries and controllers so he has no excuse for not having things charged up.

Our local Asda sells posters of Minecraft and the like if he likes that kind of thing.

I got mine one of those stackable Tetris lights, he loved that. Also a wall clock with silhouettes of his favourite game characters.

You’re going to regret this. If he’s young enough to have rules about not eating in his room, he probably doesn’t need any encouragement to get totally hooked on gaming, and then he’ll be neglecting schoolwork, friendships, family time etc.

It sounds as though you have covered everything! I wouldn’t get anything else for the room, but if he gets some birthday money suggest he tries the room for a couple of weeks then works out if there is anything else he would like in there and uses some of his birthday money to buy things for himself.

Don't make it too comfortable, remember contact with real people, exercise and fresh air are important for a growing body.🙂

He's also young enough to have rules about when he can play.

He won't be getting any money. But I may leave it as it is the room is small anyway. Or actually I might just add a LED strip to the unit is console is on ... not sure I will think 🤔

He did ask for a mini fridge this morning but I saui no because of the food rule . I did want to get him a bean bag or a rocking floor level gaming chair . But I just got him a standard gaming chair. Because he would be to low for where his tv is.

Sounds great. But I wouldn’t want to be encouraging lots of gaming. He’ll neglect everything else as he gets older.

Well said.
My nephews both spend to much time gaming. Eldest is having to re-sit his A Levels because he didn’t study enough, too busy gaming. The youngest is Y12 and spends all his time gaming in his room and can’t be bothered with his homework.
Also there are PPs regularly on MN regarding husbands, partners, boyfriends and sons who spend all their time gaming like teenagers.
Do you want that?
Out DC, now adults, we’re not allowing any gaming.

Youagain2025 · 06/05/2025 14:15

It depends on the family. And what rules are set. Ds enjoys it but its not his life.
