What stories to read aloud to a 5 year old (Reception)?

DD loves being read to (as all kids do!) but, currently she likes listening to books such as Milly Molly Mandy, The Enormous Crocodile or smaller chapter books. She's not so fussed about pictures on every page, but definitely likes the drawings of a scene like in MMM, where there's a drawing per story.

What books would you recommend? Happy to dig out older books that may have been forgotten (like Mr Pinkwhistle or similar) as she does enjoy the MMM stories .

Mine is a year older and last year she enjoyed:
George’s Marvellous Medicine
Fantastic Mr Fox
The Enchanted Wood and The Faraway Tree
Noddy
Amelia Jane
… really any Enid Blyton short stories
The Rainbow Fairies series

Apparently The Wizard of Oz is good for this age group too.

My Naughty Little Sister
Astrid Lindgren - Noisy Village series (the older translation of these stories was called the Bullerby Children)

Both family stories like MMM.

my daughters always enjoyed anything by Julia Donaldson… there are her mainstream ones… but also ones like The Everywhere Bear, Paper Dolls, Jack and the Flum Flum tree… they liked the rhythmical sing-song rhyming… I think they helped them to relax before bed. The Mog series were also a hit and the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage series. We also started reading short chapter books like Fantastic Mr Fox, the Twits, Esio Trot, and some of the Paddington stories.

Currently reading The Wishing Chair stories by Enid Blyton with my 4 year old and we’re both enjoying them.

Mine loved Horrid Henry at that age (and for a couple of years after). The Jo Simmons books are a huge hit in our house too.

The Royal Rabbits of London by (improbably) Simon Sebag-Montifiore is going down well here.

DD is also loving Greek myths - there’s an Usborne book of age-appropriate versions.

Pippi Longstocking.

All the Julia Donaldson books, they’re amazing.
And the Rachel Brights books, they’re lovely stories with nice illustrations in.

In a similar vein to MMM:
Ponder and William
Mary Kate and the Jumble Bear
the Teddy Robinson series
all are out of print but you’ll find on second had sites like Abe Books and all are fabulous, classic children’s stories

Rainbow magic fairies was very popular here. There are hundreds of them - they get a bit samey after a while. DD was very sensitive to any hint of danger/sadness at that age but could cope with some naughty goblins!

Owmyelbow · 06/05/2025 22:27

Oh god yes and magic kitten and magic puppy. Endless magic things.

Owmyelbow · 06/05/2025 22:29
