I have NC. Been told that me and my colleagues are being made redundant, but we are being kept on for a short amount of time with a small retention payment
min wage earner, been in the job for 8 years and just looking for tips really for job searching etc
I also have a disability which usually means I need adaptations Sad

I think it depends on many factors.

  • Your age
  • Career stage
  • Qualifications
  • Field
  • Whether you get a decent enhanced redundancy package or just statutory
  • What savings you have
  • What financial commitments you have

I was made redundant just over 2 years ago. It took me a while to find work, but I wasn't looking hard, and lived not working. I had enough redundancy and savings not to need work immediately. I took an extra qualification (mostly for fun.)

I considered chanfing career, but in the end i have stayed in the same sort of role as previously, mainly for financial reasons. But it was good having the luxury of time to think about what I wanted to do. I was getting to the point where I would have had to start cancelling any non-essential direct debits when I did finally get a job offer.

It's not a particularly easy time in the job market just now, though it will depend on your particular field. If you are offered any help with career guidance or CV-writing, take it. Do you want to stay in the same sort of role or switch fields? Do you have skills and experience you can adapt? You have a few months, so you don't have to rush and can take time to focus on really getting your CV polished, but if you can't afford to be out of work, don't put it off.

42
no career
BA hons degree but a pretty useless one! Also decent a levels and GCSEs
statutory redundancy pay
mortgage, live alone, no savings due to the min wage I earn

I’ve got a decent CV which someone helped me with and luckily I’ve kept it up to date
mostly customer service skills/experience

There are lots of roles you could do with customer service skills. Are there any employers you would particularly be keen on working for? Are there gaps in your experience for what you want? Spend your last weeks doing online training to fill that gap.

Think about what you want in your next role - and also what you don't want. Every job has an element of dull admin and so on, but if there are particular tasks you really don't enjoy just now, that's worth thinking about, too. You're unlikely to discover someone is a micromanager or otherwise challenging to work with at interview, unless you know someone already working there, but you can find out a lot about the company culture overall.

I can’t do any training in work time unfortunately as we won’t be winding down, it will be full on until the last minute!

the place I work for is known to be tough in the industry, it’s a bit like… if you’re a supermarket worker and say you work for Aldi, everyone will say “oh that’s tough!”
I am looking around 28-30k and I’ve sent my CV in to a recruitment place as well who have given me a call to chat through things

never been unemployed, I’ve worked continuously since I was 13
