Why do some people give off a rich vibe?

What gives off rich vibes when someone actually isn’t? My sister is a surgeon with lawyer husband, state schools, but they seem rich/posh/privileged even though they’re perfectly normal and down to earth. Why?

Some people just walk, talk, look rich. Your sister and her husband will be very high earners compared to the majority of our country though so that will help. They’ll also be educated beyond a degree and mix with a lot of ‘posh’ people processionally.

Pedallleur · 04/05/2025 19:18

Clothes/appearance? Health? Possessions? Both in high earning/highly regarded professions so they will be like their peers. Surgeon is (or considers themselves) in an elite within their profession. Law has its own similar structure.

Overtheatlantic · 04/05/2025 19:29

It will be the nuances. The way they carry themselves, their vocabulary, general appearance.

MereNoelle · 04/05/2025 19:34

A surgeon and lawyer are going to be substantially better off than the majority of the population.

Wholikesbreadandhoney · 04/05/2025 21:03

Surely it pretty obvious that whilst they might not be in " super rich" category they are " rich/ posh/ privileged compared to a good percentage of the population.

I'm wondering what circles you move in yourself if you are classing a surgeon/lawyer combination as just your "average Joe's".

Bambamhoohoo · 04/05/2025 21:05

I think sometimes it’s more about the
receiver of the “vibe”- what they pick up on, their own experiences etc
some people pick up on these things some don’t. some people would assume your sister is poor because they expect everyone to be.

JimmyGiraffe · 05/06/2025 22:29

It’s the way people walk, talk and hold themselves

My mum wasn’t one for socialising, but she had a dear lifelong friend. Both our families were in farming - but their family went broke, like completely and totally broke.
When I got married, she gave me one of her mother’s beloved vases - obviously they had no money for a gift. It made me cry & is still my favorite gift by far. I was beyond touched. Can you imagine?
So even broke, she always dressed and carried herself like she was a woman of great means - like she was worth millions.
Because of her, I think it’s all in how a person puts themselves together and how they carry themselves - they could be walking around with empty pockets but they look like a million bucks.
They just have that IT.

DreamTheMoors · 06/06/2025 02:56

Hell with that.
Ditch the shitty boyfriend.
Go ahead with your kids.
Not sleet nor rain nor snow nor flat tire boyfriends would EVER make me disappoint my children.
Not in a million.

During my first years in London, I was very interested by rich people as none had been visible where I grew up. The two things I noticed were that they seemed phenomenally clean and their air of security. I'm not sure that's the kind of thing you were thinking of.

Longsight2019 · 06/06/2025 04:38

I wonder if you’d have the same impression if you didn’t have the backstory. I’m betting you wouldn’t.

MidnightMusing5 · 05/08/2025 23:32

Where I live, a lot of people look pale. I can always spot an “outsider” because they look healthier!

I think posh people have better skin/ tone/ look healthier 🤷

mondaytosunday · 05/08/2025 23:38

Grooming, self confidence, a certain casualness about money. They may be in debt up to their eyeballs but they can still walk the walk.

cariadlet · 05/08/2025 23:38

Do you mean people give off vibes of being rich or that they give off vibes of being upper class or upper middle class? Those are 2 very different things.

If I won millions on the lottery, I would become rich overnight but I don't think it would change how I appear to others.

Moveoverdarlin · 05/08/2025 23:46

Huh??? Well it’s really obvious why a surgeon and a lawyer would come across as rich. Aside from the good salaries, they will be educated to a high standard, their peers throughout university and their working lives will be educated and high earners and a high percentage will have attended public schools.

They hold positions of power (especially the surgeon). Depending on their speciality, they will be dealing with life and death, they will possess a lot of confidence.

It’s great they come across as down to earth and perfectly nice but they give off rich vibes because they’re big earners, because they’re in positions of power, because they worked hard, because they are educated well.

It would be a bit more of a mystery if one worked in Greggs and the other was a TA, but they’re a surgeon and a lawyer.

jbm16 · 09/08/2025 20:15

I think a lot of it has to do with confidence, how well they speak, being able to hold a conversation etc. they are clearly well educated as well.

Newnamesagain · 09/08/2025 20:29

I think it's a mix between the way they vary themselves and how they maintain themselves. Expensive hair especially is just so obvious.
