Dog ate my socks! Wash or chuck?

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/05/2025 09:34

Brand new socks have been stolen and eaten by one of my muppets dogs, lol. He vomited one up this morning, just waiting for the other one. So the question is, do I chuck them or wash them and see if they are salvageable, or is that just too gross? WWYD?

Bin! That’s so gross.

shellyleppard · 04/05/2025 09:34

I'd be more worried about the sock not returning....

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 04/05/2025 09:35

id be a bit worried about where the other one is?! He actually consumed two whole socks?! Does he have form for this? Could cause a blockage couldn't it?

Gross, I'd never wear them again especially if the other one comes out of the rear end.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 04/05/2025 09:35

But yep absolutely bin, could not feel comfortable with those in my drawer!

somewherebeyond · 04/05/2025 09:35

My friends dog died after eating sock. It’s very dangerous

OrsolaRosso · 04/05/2025 09:36

I can't believe that you are actually asking, actually considering keeping them? Are the socks made of gold thread?

MyLegoHair · 04/05/2025 09:36

I'd be more concerned about the daft beast dog than my socks. But yes, bin without question!.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/05/2025 09:40

Never mind the socks, you're going to need an emergency vet visit for that.

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/05/2025 10:11

Was about to phone the vet when he vomited one sock up. Keeping an eye on him just now, or see if the other one makes an appearance. He has form for this btw - he’s a rescue and will steal anything not nailed down. The vet knows him well.. Was only half joking about keeping the socks, lol - but I did like the pattern…

my attitude is generally to shrug and chuck everything in the wash, but every time you look at these socks you will think of dog vomit

RobinEllacotStrike · 04/05/2025 10:50

Why do dogs eat socks?

Sunnyafternooning · 04/05/2025 11:01

Sorry to say, but I’d be getting to the vets ASAP for drugs to induce vomiting.

Sadly I’m no stranger to dogs with an appetite for socks (and other inedible objects, but a real taste for socks!).

If you know they’ve eaten one it really is safest.

We nearly lost our girl when she had, unbeknown to us, eaten a sock. She’d done it previously and pooed it out without issue. However, for whatever reason this one got stuck in her guts. It caused a blockage, loss of blood supply to the guts. She had surgery to remove it, but after sewing her back up, the guts still didn’t ’pink up’- they’d died. She had to have 10’ of gut removed. If she hadn’t it would have gone septic and killed her.

Sunnyafternooning · 04/05/2025 11:02

Oh, and after surgery the vet nurse presented us with the offending sock (it had been through their washing machine!).

I took it home and presented it to my husband as the most expensive sock he’d ever own- it had cost us about £5k!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/05/2025 11:08

With my vets, it's a damn sight cheaper to roll along to them on a Sunday morning for emergency treatment than it is to have to travel 20 miles with a critically ill animal at 10.30pm to the designated emergency vet for surgery after the offending item has moved down the digestive tract and caused a blockage.

Why do dogs eat socks?

It's a Bank Holiday Weekend. They know you need some excitement when there's only more repeats of Homes Under the Hammer, Bargain Hunt and Pointless on telly for the next 48 hours.

Sampler · 04/05/2025 11:35

How much were these socks ?

uncomfortablydumb60 · 04/05/2025 16:06

I’d be worried about the dog, not the socks
Has the other one appeared yet?
I do hope he’s alright
Another pair of socks is cheaper than a vet bill

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/05/2025 17:21

Dog is fine. The other sock appeared, so both accounted for. He’s eaten his tea, and is running about the garden with the others. Big muppet that he is.

Inextremis · 04/05/2025 17:43

Which end did the sock appear from? Asking cos my old lab (RIP - old age, not sock related) produced socks from her nether end on a couple of occasions (I hadn't missed them, all my socks are black and I have loads of pairs of them!).

Miley23 · 04/05/2025 17:47

Our dog used to swallow whole socks when he was younger and regurgitate them a day or so later. We would just bin them.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/05/2025 08:15

The first sock was vomited up, so I waited and just kept an eye on him, expecting the other to experience the same fate. Several hours later it came out his other end! It was way quicker than I expected. Needless to say, socks were binned, lol.
