She's always had very waxy ears but docs don't do anything and I'm concerned about making it worse if it's truly blocked where can I take her, pharmacy? And what can we do please.

Look up miscrosuctioning privately in your area. Costs about £50 here.

Pharmacy will definitely help they can look and also when DD had ear issues she got two types of drops

olderbutwiser · 03/05/2025 08:32

Definitely microsuction, but if you have to wait for that then pharmacy for ear drops to soften things up. Worth saying on repeat, don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear - if you want graphic explanations of what happens then may I direct you to youtube and Audiology Associates videos.

DD suffers a lot, olive oil ear drops are always the first point of call. This sometimes clears it in 5 or so days. If that doesn’t work then it’s usually infected and needs steroid or anti-b drops, after that it’s wax removal. Around £35-£60 depending on where you have it done. Check local chemists and specsavers.

DH has awful earwax. It didn’t improve until we got a water ear syringe. You can get them pretty cheaply off amazon. Head over the sink and gently spray the water into the ear. The water flow comes out the side so safe in the eardrums. The first time we did it a big black smelly bean of earwax came out of his ear and the smell was awful! We do it once a week now and so much comes out every time.

We use a syringe like this. I was really worried to do it myself at first but now happy to. I need earplugs often to sleep, so get wax build up over time. The syringe does make me feel a bit dizzy (mainly if water blocks the ear, and then afterwards once the wax comes out) but it's very satisfying when a lump comes out and you can immediately hear!

Brilliant thanks everyone

Ear Syringe people generally like you to be in drops for about five days, to soften the ear wax first.

Puttinginthemiles · 03/05/2025 08:48

I can understand why people syringe their own ears, but it comes with risks that you have to be prepared to take, particularly if you DIY rather than have it done by a medical professional. Micro suction is much safer.

Definitely no water if any history of ear drum problems.

Go see someone properly trained.

zeibesaffron · 03/05/2025 10:24

My son is like this - we use ear wax softener for 3-4 days then he has his ears professionally cleaned with micro suction costs £50

PunxsutawneyPhilsShadow · 03/05/2025 11:17

DS also has a problem with this, and is referred by his GP for micro-suctioning by the NHS when needed.

We always use olive oil ear drops beforehand to soften the wax, and his audiology consultant said there wasn't anything we could do to stop this happening.

Thanks everyone the blockage cleared but we found someone who could do something privately if not
