First aid kits - what do you keep in yours?

Lesson learned this week as I could have done with having steri strips on hand, and I’ve run out of decent sized plasters, so I’m doing a top up shop.

First aid kits always come with lots of stuff I l’ve never used. But I have used lots of plasters, and wound cream, Savlon or Germolene over the years! I’ve also just come across burn gel online… is that a handy thing to have, or is running under cold water good enough?

What have you found useful in a kit at home with accident prone children?

Burn gell is good for situations where you may not easily have access to running water. I would always place under running water anyway (it's supposed to be for 20minutes now by the way) but putting on burn gell after is often helpful.

Cleaning wipes and plaster are the main things I end up using, but a good sting cream for bits or stings is also a good idea. Having disposable gloves in case there is a lot of blood.

Plasters, cleansing wipes, sudocrem, antiseptic cream, self adhesive bandage, non adhesive dressings.
Most first aid gets done on the dogs!
Tick tweezers also in there.

Steristrips, extra large plasters (good for grazed knees which normal plasters rarely fit!), tweezers, tick remover, mepore dressings. When out and about then also burn gel and disposable ice packs.

Also a witch hazel stick (in the skin care section for spots!) when out for the inevitable nettle stings!

Credit card tick remover, micropore tape and Anthisan (sting/bite cream) is what I’ve added over the years.

Honestly the things I use most are just the basics- decent sized plasters (the little ones drive me mad), a couple of steri-strips and some wound wipes. I’ve also got a couple of non-stick dressings tucked away for bigger scrapes because my two seem to injure themselves in the most creative ways 🙄

Burn gel is actually really handy. You still run it under cold water first, but the gel is great afterwards when they’re still sore. I’ve used it a couple of times and was glad I had it.

If you’re topping up, this guide is quite good for a quick sense of what’s genuinely useful and what’s just “filler” stuff:
