SEN has lost four pairs of glasses. Help me find them please

Right ds has severe SEN so dispite being 13 we are where we are. I'm a bit of a hoarder so it's not like just turning over a cushion and there they are. I need to pull beds out, pull out the sofa. Check it's fallen into a toy box or draw.

Anyone fancies keeping me motivated? We have already looked for two hours in the obvious places. I don't have ADHD but I do get easily side tracked. I want to get a child's bed out as well in the process.

My DD lost hers all the time ... it drove me nuts!!

SafeAndStranded · 02/05/2025 10:20

Mine have a habit of falling down between my bed and bedside table and sliding slightly underneath the bed, or falling off the arm of the sofa and going underneath. Which is always a pain in the arse as without them I can't see to find them.

IncessantNameChanger · 02/05/2025 10:52

I have tipped out every draw in the bedside cabinet. I'm going to pull his bed out now. Pray there's no wolf spiders. Maybe I should get a pint glass before I start. We get massive spiders which im fine with. Unless they run off.

Definitely try sofa cushions. Also bags and pockets. Does he take them off in the bathroom to wash? Might be worth a check. Good luck!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/05/2025 11:26

Could they be in the car? Under a seat or down the side?

@IncessantNameChanger ChatGPT suggests the following

Common Spots Glasses Get Left:

  1. Bed and Bedding: Check under pillows, between sheets, or beside the bed.
  2. Bathroom: Near the sink, on the toilet tank, or next to the bathtub.
  3. Couch/Living Room: Between cushions, under furniture, or behind pillows.
  4. Kitchen: On the table, counter, or next to snacks or drinks.
  5. Play Area or Desk: If he has a favorite toy spot, activity table, or desk.
  6. Car or Stroller: If you went out recently.
  7. Pockets or Bags: Check jackets, backpacks, or purses.
Helpful Tips:
  • Try recreating his routine from the last time he had them.
  • Use a flashlight at floor level—the lenses can reflect light, making them easier to spot.
  • Ask him where he last remembers seeing them—his memory might offer a clue even if it’s not exact.
  • If he’s verbal, gently ask questions without stress so he doesn’t feel pressure.

Fallen behind the toilet / sink column?
in the waste paper basket?
in the messy drawer in the kitchen?
left in the garden on a table?
on a windowsill behind the curtain?
in a shoe chucked on the pile by the front door?

I feel your pain. My 11 year old has learning disabilities and he is always losing his hearing aids. I find he often puts them in a shelf and they fall off.

IncessantNameChanger · 02/05/2025 11:57

I have pulled out the bed and the stuff and dust is alarming. I need to at least clean, tidy and sort there before I move onto next area. I'm so surprised I didn't even find one pair there as he normally goes straight to bed with a snack and drink to chill with his ipad after school.

Now I have made a mess and still no glasses.

I'm going to tidy and hoover by the bed. Box the stuff I need to tidy away then pull out the sofa.

Next the toy box. He has also lost two pairs of school trousers as he tends to strip off when he gets in. But where would school trousers be? They aren't tiny like glasses.

He can talk and did try to look but he is like "they've gone mum" and I'm thinking not at £50 there not. Arrghhh!

Tea. 10 ten minutes then go again.

Will look in car too

It sounds chaotic! Could you make a system with him, maybe use pictures and start a routine e.g. he comes in from school and gets changed, he does this in his room and his uniform goes in a basket, put his casual clothes out in the morning before he goes to school, if he takes his glasses off they go in a tray by his bed and his ipad goes on there too etc.

IncessantNameChanger · 02/05/2025 14:27

Yes definitely chaotic. He is one of four and we have been slack with him because of his high needs. He doesn't like being quizzed when he gets home as he gets a taxi for over a hour into his school 25 miles away. I was really expecting them.to be next to bed and just kicked under.

I think going forward he needs a bright yellow pair for home and I take his school ones off him when he walks in the door.

Two pairs of trousers I found hanging up in his brothers wardrobe ( dh doesn't check dispite name lables).

I most definitely need to up my game. I have just had a chaotic three months trying to sort out his sisters ehcp.

I think a big open toy box next to his bed was a bad idea. Basket is a good idea

DS (not SEN) put his in his toy castle to keep them safe when he was around 7 or 8. Of course we only discovered this once we replaced them.
Not much help, sorry OP but Good Luck

IncessantNameChanger · 02/05/2025 14:32

He has a tall kalix unit next to his bed which he can't access when in bed as its the side with no opening on. He shares with sister and she is messy too.

I feel after today I could do with packing up moving house style. Maybe they went in the bin by accident? His pants was the top of his bin last week.

I think we need a visual timetable for getting home.

He only picked these glasses up on Saturday.

It took three days to loose them.

Oh god, I feel your pain!
How urgently does he need them? When things like this happen in my house (all the frigging time), I decide not to look for the thing and tidy up instead, they usually turn up once I’ve given up. But if he needs them all the time then I guess it’s more urgent than that. I’ve also been known to say a prayer to St Anthony (ex-Catholic), or ask the fairies 🥴
Good luck! X

IncessantNameChanger · 02/05/2025 15:01

He is pretty blind without them. Definitely needs them for school.

I'm going to pray. It's worth a shot.

Have you asked school transport in case he's dropped them in the taxi?

St Anthony is your go to Saint.

Places i have found Dp's lost glasses recently include the bathroom, jeans pocket, on top of the washing machine and on top of the microwave. He only needs them for reading so tends to just drop them anywhere. Luckily they're cheap.

MiddleAgedDread · 02/05/2025 15:46

if it's that chaotic I would seriously look at getting a decluttering and organising business in to help you sort things out and put systems in place. BUT these things are only worth the money if you can keep on top of it. I'm my worst enemy for having a blitz and sorting a room out and then stuffing things back in drawers and cupboards any old how!!

UpsideDownChairs · 02/05/2025 15:57

Places I have found DS's glasses (and now also Invisalign things):

Mainly down the side of the mattress - sometimes actually making it under the mattress and through the slats to the floor below (a bit squished, but normally still wearable)

In the pocket I hang up next to his bed for him to put his glasses in - (rarely)

On the shelf in my bathroom where he showers (see also my bed, the drawers just outside my bathroom, the shelf in my wardrobe - anywhere he might have paused while going for a shower)

Anywhere in the car - generally down the sides of the seats

The bench in the hallway where he puts his coat on (if it's winter, and he puts a snood thing on then he'll take off his glasses to do it)

The windowsill next to where he sits when he's avoiding his brother.

I always buy two pairs, and one is always lost, without fail, within a week. I'm just thankful that he seems to be able to keep hold of coats these days - when he was younger we could lose 2 a term.
