I said i had to go to the ATM at lunch time yesterday.
It occurred to me people used to refer to it as ' the hole in the wall' - well they did where I live.
I've not heard that expression in years!!!
Someone must have decided to stop using it!
I have also realised we don't say a child i with SEN is having a melt down but they are ' in crisis '

I find evolving language fascinating and like how things change and people adapt. It's not like there an announcement on News at 10 with clive Myrie telling us things like we don't use words like hole in the wall anymore! 😆

The word berk.

scalt · 02/05/2025 20:36

VDU - who remembers this term, from the 80s or earlier? I remember seeing a leaflet at the optician’s: “your eyes and VDUs”.

For the uninformed: it stands for visual display unit. In other words, a computer screen.

RaraRachael · 02/05/2025 20:41

McDonald's is still McDonald's where I live

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 02/05/2025 20:47

Baggsy
hovvers (too short trousers)
skinners (too tight trousers)

Chinny chin chin whilst stroking your chin when someone was telling a tall tale (school 1970s NE Scotland).

When I moved from Scotland to the West Country (England) as a child, I had to get used to saying "itchy chin" rather than " chinny chin chin"... The struggle was real

GreenMarigold · 02/05/2025 21:07

Instead of swearing my mum would say ‘oh blast’. I catch myself using it every now and again but other than that I haven’t heard it for years.

GivingUpFinally · 02/05/2025 21:45

So so so many...you'll be able tell I was 90s 00s teen.

"That's so gay"
"Mental..."
"You're a minge piece"
"He was so hammered" or "out of his tree
"Random'
" mad sick" = extra good
"Can't believe she was dissed like that"
"Yo mama...."
"Can I bum a fag?" Borrow/have a smoke
Slag tag
"He's a PHATTIE alright"
"Pretty fly"
"Chicks before dicks"
May get banned for one of these ones but they were common...
"He's/she's a poser, hoser, sk8ter boi/grl, whigger, emo kid, Loser..."

Dontlletmedownbruce · 02/05/2025 22:56

When I was a kid everything was 'knacky'
Usually referring to a toy or gadget. And if it was easy it was 'cinch'. An attractive man was never hot, he was a 'screw' or a 'hunk.' And of course for emphasis we uses the words 'very' or 'extremely', both which seem to have been replaced with 'super'. I find it super annoying and it makes me feel super old!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 02/05/2025 22:57

Janey Mac!

(Not sure if this was just an Irish thing)

RaraRachael · 02/05/2025 23:10

A boyfriend was a lad and a girlfriend was a dame.

You'd get a click or a trap if you got a date at the disco 😂

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 02/05/2025 23:31

Or is that your hairy(for a girl friend)
Always hated that one
Or is at yir blonde.. regardless of hair colour.

GeorgianaM · 03/05/2025 00:49

I still say been, moron and blast it/blasted!

Rubber Johnny.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 03/05/2025 01:02

Bum a fag - borrow a cigarette
First on - the end of a cigarette shared with a friend
Bumchum - good friend
bagging off - snogging
Fag hag - female best friend of gay man
An Empty - parents away so all pile round for a party in the empty house
Press - a cupboard
Ben the room - in the other room

dontcomeatme · 03/05/2025 02:24

Dodgying someone (ringing and then hanging up before they answer)
Knocking on for (knocking on a friends door to see if they want to play out)
It's only coppers
Keep the change
And this one is disgusting and might be area exclusive, but "poking someone", meaning foreplay

HangryGreenBiscuit · 03/05/2025 03:41

TurquoiseKiss · 03/05/2025 03:52

I was 10 in 1998 and remember seeing writing in public toilets and in the social club (another thing of the past!) we used to go to that would say ‘L.M (or any initials) is 100% fit” 😅 and I remember my friend asking me if someone could be 75% fit or even less maybe?

Anyways the word ‘fit’ for a good looking person was THE word until the early 2000’s where I grew up. Apparently it’s ’snack’ now 🤔

BlueEyedBogWitch · 03/05/2025 04:54

Got a right beamer on - blushing.
Booling - rolling something or pushing something on wheels, eg ‘booling a pram.’
Getting off with - having a snog with.

scalt · 03/05/2025 04:59

In the TV show Thunderbirds (first on TV long before I was born), the characters often said “for Pete’s sake”; and I got laughed at big time for saying this myself. 😳

Kentucky instead of KFC.

My dad says this! He loves an occasional little Kentucky.

MammaTo · 03/05/2025 06:40

My Nan used to say “I need a few messages from the shop”. You don’t really hear people calling them messages anymore.

VDU - who remembers this term, from the 80s or earlier? I remember seeing a leaflet at the optician’s: “your eyes and VDUs”.

For the uninformed: it stands for visual display unit. In other words, a computer screen.

Also DSE - display screen equipment, the regulations that get you a free eye test.

VDU is still the term used in Computer Science.

dontcomeatme · 03/05/2025 13:51

Oh I forgot we used to say www. for every site we searched 😅

cramptramp · 03/05/2025 13:53

We say cash machines. ATM is too American for me to use. I have just about stopped saying that I’ve video’d a telly programme, and now try to say recorded.

notacooldad · 04/05/2025 16:15

Just heard some say they were walking like john Wayne! I've not heard that in years!
