Hello, some unknown substance has leaked on our sideboard under a bit of paper and it now has this mark. Any ideas on how I can remove it? Thank you

If it's stain the timber chances are you would need to sand the whole top to get rid of it.

Some online sources suggest oxalic acid for getting dark stains out of wood. Maybe have a look at some of the Youtube tutorials?

I have used mayonnaise to get a water mark off wood... and it worked!

You could try mayonnaise on top of it for several hours or overnight then wipe off. Allow to dry and repeat if needed.
As with everything, advice is to first test on a small area but my thought was, well its already ruined

It sounds odd but put a damp cloth on it and iron over it for a couple of minutes. I had a dreadful watermark on my coffee table and this method completely removed it. Try it.

Oxalic acid is only effective for removing the tannings from woods such as Oak, I have seen so many videos on utube where people are using it incorrectly and it is dangerous stuff if not used right. With all due respect to WearyAuldWuman I would not recommend even trying it in this situation.

Was the coffee table polished or in bare wood? I’m only curious because this in theory should not have worked to remove a water mark in fact it should have made it worst. Normally this method is used on bare timber to remove deep scratches and it works by turning the water into steam (hence the iron) this swells the fibers of the timber then the then the scratch can be sanded out. If you try this on a polished surface the steam will just penetrate the polish / lacquer and create a watermark. Again sorry to be dismissive but I doubt it will work a stain.

Add cigarette ashes to tge mayontoo. I've tried mayo alone, and with the ashes. It helped. The wood looks very light so I'd give it a try. It won't hurt.

It worked on a polished wooden table.

If the surface is bare wood, hydrogen peroxide will probably remove the stain but may make the area too light. You would need to sand any finish off and reapply once you’ve removed the stain though.

Thank you. In all sincerity, I appreciate your taking the time time to correct me.
