Was that a missile over York?

It looked like one.

Really loud, not a plane - but could be wrong.

Or am I over imagining?

@notimagain Not you on a thread that mentions FR again?!!

Have you got some sort of built-in sensor that detects MN flightradar threads, or what? 😂😂

Pinkseashellsonthesand · 01/05/2025 22:09

Thank you very much @notimagain for your very informative and detailed reply, I really appreciate you taking the time to do that, thank you.

I've heard sonic booms over Essex before. Not recently. But it is very unsettling....

Who’s flying about in fighter jets if it’s not the RAF?

The US Air Force have loads of bases in the UK! I live near one. They have a load of F-15s & F-16s stationed here

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought someone told me once that military aircraft does not show up on Flight Radar?

Oh yes it does! It depends on whether they’ve switched on their transponder or not. I was watching some F-15e Eagles last night on flightradar24

Thanks so much @EmmaJane2025 , thank you for your response.
Also thank you so much posting the map, that's great, much appreciated.
I'm new to Flight Radar, as you can probably tell!

RAF Spadeadam put a notice that they would be undertaking low flying training exercises over Northumberland this weekend. I imagine it’s a coordinated training exercise and other bases are imvolved.

notimagain · 03/05/2025 08:04

Blimey over a weekend! That"ll upset a few folks.

Generally there's military low flying going on most weekdays over parts of the UK, though nothing like the amount there used to be.

There's obviously going to more associated with the major exercises, I think pre notifying the public of that is a relatively recent thimg.

Occasionally if I'm on the decking in our garden you can see the river Conwy below. The planes training come up the river very low, below the hills. They're amazing to see so close up. They then follow the river for a time then head west into the Snowdonia range staying low over the lakes.

Such skilled pilots.

Lots of people! As others have said the USAF have a significant presence in this country and we also host other nations' airforces pretty regularly. I live in Cumbria and at the moment it's more unusual to have a day when there aren't any military aircraft skimming my roof tiles than when there are. Yesterday was a bit out of the ordinary as we had some over that I didn't recognise and were even lower than usual but Typhoons and F15s are so common that I barely even look up any more. I was intrigued to see Swiss aircraft a couple of months ago. You'd think they'd have plenty of lakes and mountains of their own but they were busy whizzing round ours. Maybe it goes against Swiss noise regulations. 😂 But seriously, we see many kinds of both British and foreign planes and helicopters periodically, it's not that unusual and don't think it's anything to particularly worry about. Yes there's more activity currently but that's not really surprising and there's always been phases of more intense activity on and off.
My DS made me laugh when we watched the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on tv and the somewhat depleted flypast was shown. He said "Pah! Call that a flypast, we get better over our school most days of the week!"
I know it must be concerning to people who don't see military aircraft often but as anyone who lives in a training area or near an airbase will know they are out and about regularly - always have been and probably always will be.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/05/2025 10:06

I'm 20 miles north of York and we've had low flying jets over the moors for a while - they're scaring the horses and even the dog has had a look!

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 03/05/2025 10:12

We get a lot of vintage aircraft round these parts. So much so that I barely even bother to look up when I hear a Spitfire going over.

Very true,.though I think Flightradar has upped interest to some degree, and maybe created a bit of sensitivity.

As aside there's no great mystery as to why some mil "show", on the tracking sites, some don't..Leaving aside transponders being on, off or in an encrypted mode, the whole point of flying at low level is to reduce the chances of detection by anything.

Something flying at 250 feet nipping up a valley in Wales or the Scottish highlands is almost certainly to be way below the base of most amateur tracking sites coverage.

justasking111 · 03/05/2025 12:05

A friends husband used to fly over the area in a big old plane practicing for the air show. Lancaster bomber I think. He'd waggle his wings over the village and his kids school. I've helped out at military events the fly pasts are so popular.
