Would you leave your current job in exchange for a year’s salary?

Just that really. It’s not an actual redundancy situation I’m facing just a hypothetical.

If not, at what point would it be worth it to you?

I’m risk avoidant probably to a fault so I don’t think I would, even though it would take me significantly longer than that to build up my savings so much, and I could probably cover my bills on a lower wage.

How old are you, makes a big difference?

I did just this but was 57 and retiring at 60 anyway.
Crunched the numbers and it did not make sense to stay at work what with commuting costs etc.

Probably. I quite like my job and my colleagues, but I’m not especially wed to the industry I work in, I have in-demand skills and I’m reasonably confident that I’d a) find another job at a similar level reasonably quickly and b) can rely on the freelance stuff I pick up as a side gig for a bit of income.

Years ago I would have said no, because I hated interviews and it would have therefore been an incredibly stressful situation to be in. Nowadays I’m senior enough and confident enough that interviews are very different and I find them less challenging.

Not from my current job.
I'm here 15 years and redundancy is worth more than a year's salary to me - unless the year's salary is tax free?
Can I walk straight into another job?

Yes.

I would right now. And have done in the past.

Right now I'm too new at work to get that much as a redundancy payment, so it would need to be a compromise agreement. That would all be taxed. But I still would.

In the past I did get redundancy of a year's salary, so got the £30k tax free, and it was early in the tax year so I could afford to have time off. The maths of the tax free bit meant I could afford 18 months before getting a new job if needed. I volunteered for redundancy.

The job market is tough in my industry right now. You should factor in how quickly you think you could get a new role. Then do the maths and see whether it is worthwhile to you.

I’m 33 but this isn’t a real scenario just interested in other people’s views!
