New rainbow/ brownies and guide badges

I just saw a lovely story on BBC breakfast about lots of new badges that are coming out this year. They were talking about the benefits of being part of the organisation. I said to my son, they should have something above Rangers for middle aged women and we have our own badges. I asked him what they would be 'navigating your mid-life crisis/ menopause badge he said. I love the idea of having that badge to sew on my coat. Got me thinking what other badges we should have??

Omg you lot are making me smile.
I defo have bronze, silver and gold of the pet badge.

Could we have the first aid badge? DH edition.

You've had at least 10 consecutive days of troubleshooting DHs daily random pains with simple solutions like, take a painkiller, stop pressing it if it hurts when you press it.

You've mastered the concerned face, when really, you don't care.

You've dealt with a REAL emergency like constipation, some minor DIY/ sport self inflicted injury, injury caused by 'sleeping funny'

It’s called the WI. Brownies for adults. No badges though.

I know WI has modernized. I'm possibly thinking of a less down market, feral version of WI. Although I have considered joining the WI, mainly for cake, but that is probably a stereotype on my part.

There’s also Pet Badge — though instead of writing a paragraph and drawing a picture of my guinea pig a la 1987, you’re required to pass at least four of the following tasks:

Pet catching: put cat in carrier

The Vet Visit, followed by a successful call to the pet insurer to get them to pay out for the expensive antibiotics

Vomit cleaning

Fox Poo removal
Or
Removal of mouse guts

Followed by extra credit for:
All nighter with poorly pet wrapped up in towel, plus £150 for emergency Sunday vet visit at which pet is perfectly sprightly

Oo Oo, I totally qualify for the cleaning of vomit badge!

This is squarely from DC though, rather than pets. Maybe we should even have a subset of bronze, silver and gold for this? (Gold being for expert level, extra chunky, copious, luminous and presented in the wee hours, spread liberally across DC, bedding, floor, toys and matted in hair 🤢)

The WI only gets the mantle of adult Brownies if they regularly get the big parachute out and play games with it.

If so, will the WI accept a 30 year old who knows nothing about making jam?

Toddlerteaplease · 01/05/2025 06:37

@iwentjasonwaterfallsmy WI did nothing like jam or cake making. We had talks and craft activities. Steel drumming, Pilates etc. although I was disappointed not to get to sing Jerusalem.

My DS once gave me a sticker because I made a particularly good packed lunch…

I know this is light-hearted, OP, but there have been a few posts recently where people seemed very set on being externally validated for normal life things/stages.

Also I suppose the 'navigating menopause' badge makes me wonder what failing the badge would involve? Presumably it needs to be possible to fail a Guide badge, otherwise actually getting one by successfully fulfilling whatever the requirements are would be meaningless -- so how would you 'fail' at menopause?

You don't fail badges, you just work until you achieve them. Have to tick all the boxes.
So you wouldn't fail the menopause badge, just just don't get it until you've done it.
I can't have the menopause badge yet cos I haven't done it yet. I haven't failed!

GuidingSpirit · 01/05/2025 06:56

Definitely look into the Trefoil Guild as pp above linked, OP. Our local one is walks, cake and badges. Sounds like it would be just what you are looking for.

Dogstar78 · 01/05/2025 06:58

@iwentjasonwaterfalls yes! The parachute! You are getting the vibe of my adult brownies. Love it.

@WoahThreeAces exactly. I classify my life as stumbling from one disaster to the next. It's the taking part and getting through it that counts, however you get there.

Of course, you could volunteer to help with Brownies. You can get the badges and play with the parachute then.
I was a Unit helper for 12 years - it was great. The adults always maintained we had more fun than the kids, especially on Pack Holiday etc.

The parachute and the badges were the two primary reasons I became a Leader.

oh and helping to provide fun opportunities for girls in my area

Mostly the parachute and badges though

Seeline · 01/05/2025 07:59

@iwentjasonwaterfalls I was tempted to go back when my DD came back from Rangers one night saying that they'd played human Hungry Hippos! The girls were on little boards with castors on and were pushed into the middle of the room to catch balls with upturned laundry baskets. I think that sounds more fun than parachutes!!!

Dogstar78 · 01/05/2025 08:53

@seeline that's what I am talking about! £70 therapy session or human hungry hippos literally no contest.

I have to say the senior leader on BBC breakfast did a great sales pitch and it did make me consider it. I also want a cool alias like Sandpiper

I'm a Cub leader and I'm pretty sure my Young Leader comes just for the stuff like building Bug Hotels and finger painting!

doodleschnoodle · 01/05/2025 09:10

Bloody love it when we get the parachute out! I really think if I ran the programme with nothing but the parachute very week, the girls would be totally content. Every week they pipe up ‘Are we doing the parachute today?!’

Needmorelego · 01/05/2025 09:29

@Seeline I've seen clips online of the human hungry hippos being played in a care home for the elderly.
The players were in wheelchairs with a laundry basket on a broom handle and their carers pushing the wheelchairs.
Brilliant 😂

TheNightingalesStarling · 01/05/2025 09:31

My eldest did "Human Curling" on camp... basically being propelled on a wheeled board towards a target!

OneForTheRoadThen · 01/05/2025 10:05

I’m a Rainbow leader and I always award myself a badge at the end of term, along with the girls. My husband sews then into a blanket for me.

Dogstar78 · 01/05/2025 12:10

Keep it coming, this thread is making my heart leap.

I am years away from this badge but can we have a car seat/ pram badge. I bet they have got really easy to wrangle these days, but they were not 14 years ago.

Can we holiday badges?
Long car journey- must involve at least a 1 hour unscheduled delay.
If this includes pets you get a gold badge.

Flights (short haul and long haul)

Packing for holidays

Managing different age ranges on holiday

Totally drama free multi-generational holidays (gold if it includes other peoples kids)

A topical one... a staged badge for voting (like Scouts have for Nights Away). So every time you vote in an election, you get another tick. Badges given for 1, 5, 10, 15 etc elections voted in.

Aessedaioftarvalon · 01/05/2025 13:11

Rebel Badge Club is amazing - over 18s version of Guides/Scouts. I love it.

FusionChefGeoff · 01/05/2025 14:36

This is a running joke with me - parenting gives you no end of skills you never expected you’d need. Just this weekend I earned my ‘Releasing children stuck in those large tartan extra luggage bags’ badge
