Should I have stopped at this accident

I witnessed a minor car accident today I was thinking about it and I think I may be technically involved and should have stopped.

A van was turning down a road and a car pulled out and went into the back of it. I think the van couldn't turn down though because he was waiting on me pulling forward so that's what makes me think I was involved? I couldn't drive away because the car had already edged right out so I was just crawling forward. It's hard to explain but that's the jist

Should I have stopped? I don't know what to do now because its not like I can contact anyone.

I thought you were supposed to stop if you witness an accident

FatherFrosty · 29/04/2025 17:31

I always stop as a witness. After getting screwed over once as no one stopped and ending up in a 50/50 situation. Now I always stop and give both parties my details.

im a little confused on your description about involvement though.

weathervane1 · 29/04/2025 17:33

I think the fact that the van was waiting on you is irrelevant. You couldn't move, the van couldn't turn down and a car pulled into the back of the van because the car driver didn't check that it was clear to pull out. The car driver is at fault unless I've misunderstood your post.

She wasn’t asking who was at fault, just if she was ‘involved’ be association I guess

I'm sorry that's absolutely horrendous drawing but that's what I've got to work with right now!

That diagram made it more complicated 😂😂

mayaknew · 29/04/2025 17:48

😂😂😂😂

I don't know why I put the one way signs and that is absolutely not relevant at all

So, if I've got this right, the van wanted to turn to his right, but couldn't as your rear end was still blocking the turn off. You couldn't pull forward because a car from and adjacent street was pulling out ahead of you. But that doesn't make much sense to me because you'd have had priority over the car, as you were proceeding straight ahead, so it shouldn't have been pulling out? But it did, and drove into the back of the van?

faerietales · 29/04/2025 17:52

Generally you're supposed to stop as a witness but I don't think there's any legal obligation so I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe keep an eye on social media in case either of the drivers ask for you to come forward?

This is my exact understanding too. Are we correct OP?

MotherJessAndKittens · 29/04/2025 17:56

I don’t think you needed to stop but I suppose you were a witness for the van driver.

I'm thinking that the op left a gap because of the bin lorry? If she'd have moved forward she would have blocked the car (the one that hit the van) in

I think you should have stopped, but you weren't involved.

mayaknew · 29/04/2025 18:31

Yes you're all correct the car pulled out onto the road (I think he couldn't see round the bin lorry) so I had to slow down. And almost come to a stop.

I was waiting on the van to come past the bin lorry to then let the car out and go ahead

I started creeping forward when I seen the van wanted to turn in and the car just pulled right out and into the back of the van

OP posts:
mayaknew · 29/04/2025 18:34

It's not that if I moved forward I would have blocked the car, the car was already sitting out on the road so it was blocking me from moving forward

Arglefraster · 29/04/2025 18:37

I would have stayed /given my details as if other people hadn't stayed to speak to the police DH would have been blamed for a RTC that was not his fault (the other driver called mates to come lift his car &hide the drugs to change the scene!!!)

mayaknew · 30/04/2025 11:21

Yeah I am now really regretting not stopping. I don't think there's anything I can do now though 🤦🏻‍♀️
